Why Is It Ok to Steal Helmets?

Can someone explain this to me.

I see a lot of people riding personal escooters in Brisbane.

That's fine

When you look on their heads most have stolen helmets from either Lime or City Cycle.

I don't understand this.

If you can afford 400 bucks minimum for an escooter shouldn't you be able to afford to buy your own helmet.

I'm not sure I understand why people are so cool with it?

Do they own the escooters or are they rentals ?

Didn't a lot of the bike hire companies go bust and sold off all their stock really cheap? Perhaps a scooter rental place bought them?

  • Nice shiny new xiaomis nost of the time. So yeah they bought then dropping 400 - 600 but to cheap to buy own helmet

  • i saw a chick that was riding a lime bike. she had the helmet hanging upside down from the handle bars, using it as a drink holder for a big cup of drink lol

shrug Personally, I always wear my $800 Shoei motorcycle helmet with a tinted visor and biker jacket whenever I ride my escooter.

    • Ah, I use my Arai Corsair V RC. It's lighter.

      • I have to admit, my Shoei helmet feels like I'm wearing a Mark VI Panzer Tank on my head whenever I ride my Yamaha. I should try another brand at some stage. But I definitely feel like I'm Robocop whenever I'm wearing my Shoei on the road :P.

Just get whatever fits your head shape.

My first helmet was a Shoei cause it had a really cool Joker/Jester decals. Fitted like a vice on my face.

  • They didn't necessary go out and 'steal' them. I've seen countless helmets lying around in the grass and other random places. They might be doing a favour by cleaning up the place.

still theft since the owner can be located.

…not really if there's no name or owner contact details on it….

The bikes and scoots are evrywhere if your serious as you walk past put one on a bike or scooter

          • -1

@hikaru78: How do you know they don't do that after a ride? You're assuming a lot, or did you ask them?

            • +1

@tranter: are you seriously saying the rider picked up a scooter helmet and put it during their ride to return it. Did the easter bunny get you all your easter chocolates

              • @hikaru78: All I'm saying is you are assuming a lot without knowing for sure what the facts are.

Lime have also been giving away helmets worldwide.

                • @tranter: lime don't give away helmets in Brisbane. Please provide any evidence to actually back up the fact that lime say you can keep their helemets. City cycle don't give away helmets either

        • well OP is talking about bikeshare helmets with the company name on it - which would be the only way to imply that they've been 'stolen'/'appropriated'.

          • @CheapskateQueen: given on one guy was wearing a citycycle helmet out at everton park im pretty sure he didnt find the helmet out there. (Thats about 6-7km from the nearest city cycle station)

  • The same reason you pick up $10 in the street and put it in your wallet.

    • I thought any amount of money lower than $500 legally had no owner and if you find it on the ground then it is yours, like striking oil in the outback.

I think you have to take reasonable action to find the true owner regardless of amount.

        • +1

I think it's perfectly reasonable to require verification of the banknote's serial number.

      • +3

Nope, you can be charged with "theft by finding" which is a law that most police probably aren't going to enforce if it's just a small amount of money.

I assume the law was made to stop thieves "finding" money.

I found some diamonds in this locked safe!

  • When they first started you could get a Melbourne Bike Share helmet really cheap, and I think (but may be wrong) some were even free with he first hundred or so memberships. There may have been a similar promo.

Edit: Melbourne Bike Share helmets are still only $5. Seems like a cheap solution imo.

I would never use a shared public helmet. It's just disgusting.

      We should be friends.

    • +1

Ah, guess I'm not the only one that also brings my own helmet when riding a Lime / mobike.

    • +1

I agree. Although there are endless disgusting things we come in contact with the moment we leave our homes, many of which we don't even think about.

  • If you can afford 400 bucks minimum for an escooter shouldn't you be able to afford to buy your own helmet.

Probably only had enough for the bike but not enough for a helmet…..so it was either buy helmet but no bike or buy bike but no helmet, which would you prefer?

And thats wbats wrong with society
Yes im the jerk who thinks if you cant buy both yourself you should go without

That's nothing. In this post people proudly let everybody know that they steal toilet rolls from their workplace.

  • it's called finders fee, allowing you to use it for a period then return it at your convenience.

  • This really upsets me too - pretty much only in relation to the Melbourne Bike Share helmets - the for-profits I have less empathy for. I've confronted a few people about it but they've turned out to be unintelligent thugs. So I just try to collect the helmets where I can. The brutes who steal should consider that someone could end-up injured because of their actions.
