Get Better Wi-Fi in Garage, External Antennas??

Hi All,

I was hoping to get some ideas for a first world problem i have.

I have a WiFi enabled Garage door opener and also a google home i use a fair bit in the garage.
Only problem is when the door is closed the wiFi coverage is not sufficient.

Currently i have a Netgear Orbi repeater on the window sill closest possible to the garage
I am in a Unit Layout like this -https://gyazo.com/9163ffa7e1c052eb6bff5c8e3f09de20 (Yes i had a professional draw this up in CAD)

I have a power point just inside near the garage door where i could mount a WiFi router.

i was wondering if there are any routers that support external atennas i could put just on the outside? (I need it to be fairly inconspicious to not bother the other owners)

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

  • according to the manual the TL-WR702N has the ability to create a wireless bridge. Would be slow but might work?

After checking it works, spray paint it black and poke it through door above the roller. USB cable through the hole.

An expensive solution would be to get a NanoStation M NSM5 or similar, and bridge it to another pointing out. When i did this i taped it with black gaffa tape so you can't see it. Then ran the lan cable (with drip loops) back inside the building.

If you're in the garage when you use it, just put some magnets on the back of a WR702N or similar, and just stick it to the door when you need wifi.

    • Thanks i think if i was to stick a router outside it would need to be weatherproof. I might look at the Orbi outdoor version. My only concern is other ppl complaining in the building. But i guess easier to ask for forgiveness than permission

The Nanostation is a definite winner for range. It's only got a 60 degree spread, which means the linear range compared to any residential/consumer router is ridiculously huge - in one specific direction.

I've had a pair bridging two buildings down our main street about 400m apart, flawless signal for the whole use period. I then shifted to using them as access points instead; and I have zero issues even through several brick walls/tin roof to our devices.

And, in comparison to a classic Wifi repeater, they are similarly priced - not expensive like other commercial equipment can be.

Maybe look into Ethernet over Power as an option?

    • it's unit with external individual garages

      most likely different circuits

    • Tried that already. Different circuit sadly

  • We've deployed Ubiquiti Nanostations P2P wireless bridges at quite a few work sites and they work a treat. Might be an overkill but worth looking at pending the distance.

    • problem is they are fairly big. I was hoping to find a router with some kind of external antenna i could peak out of the garage haha

  • Orbi can do daisy chain. I bought an orbi satellite (RBW30 I think) for $99 from ebay. You can put one in the garage so it creates a wireless backhaul with the one in the house by the window.

BTW which garage opener have you got?

    • Yeah i might try another Orbi in the garage and see if it has better wifi. I was looking at their outdoor unit but i think that may be just a little too ugly

  • make a dish out of alu. foil placed behind router antenna and direct towards the garage
