iPad Pro 11-Inch or Galaxy Tab S4?

My post about Chinese tablets has generated a good discussion ( I think :P ), but now I've started to consider more capable devices from known brands for a few reasons:

  • warranty
  • track record of better hardware
  • longevity

What are your thoughts on the iPad Pro 11-inch versus the Galaxy Tab S4?

My typical usage is reading large PDF books (on physics and image processing) and watching HD lectures/YouTube. I do not play games.

Also, what are your thoughts on buying a tablet as part of a plan rather than outright? My reasoning for the former is thus:

  • Yes, it is expensive to buy a tablet as part of a plan, but if you have $60,000 in a saving account with high interest rate, you can get on average $60/month interest (after deducting tax). $60/month is a typical plan for the iPad Pro 11-inch. Therefore, this way, the tablet pays for itself without forking over a thousand dollars outright.

Appreciate the advice!

Yes, it is expensive to buy a tablet as part of a plan, but if you have $60,000 in a saving account with high interest rate, you can get on average $60/month interest (after deducting tax). $60/month is a typical plan for the iPad Pro 11-inch. Therefore, this way, the tablet pays for itself without forking over a thousand dollars outright.

This makes no sense. If that were the case, anything that costs $60/month also pays for itself? It is still costing you $60 a month regardless of how much interest you are earning.

I don't think you need a pro model to watch youtube and read, but hey I'm guilty of buying over the top specs when I don't need it too

    • yea the ipad doesnt pay for itself. the $60k pays for it.

  • I think both of those are overkill. I bought a samsung S2 tab recently for $300 and it does everything you need.

However I would just recommend you buy a normal non pro iPad that's more current if you don't have any specific android needs.

  • iPads are far and away the best tablets. It seems like Samsung/Google just don't really care about the tablet space.

The main limitation with iPads is that they run iOS, which was originally designed for the iPod touch/iPhone, so can be quite limited. Having said that, the iOS 13 update coming this year is apparently feature-heavy for the iPad so it more closely resembles a desktop experience, and finally makes use of the insanely powerful processor.

    • What's limited?

      (Honest question)

      • Shallow file browsing and restrictive multi-tasking would be the two main problems with iPads, with respect to being a replacement for a laptop. It underpins how we interact with devices, and means that even day to day users will likely still need access to an actual computer to get everything they want done. Apple has made little steps in recent years, but iOS 13 will (apparently) be the big step that people have been wanting.

Then throw in little bits and pieces like the restrictive tile format of apps, no widgets, etc. These are things that are already mainstays on Android tablets (and Android, in general) but Android's other shortcomings in the tablet space means that iPads are still typically considered the best tablets. iOS 13 will make the gap even bigger, hopefully.

        • I find the multi tasking much smoother and better then the Samsungs

Multitasking has recently been updated, hard to get used to, but great when you know what to do lol

Guess it's up to personal preference and what people are used to. I'm used to iOS

@Danstar: Multitasking in comparison to MacOS/Windows, not Android. You can’t have multiple windows of one app open, for example, which will change in iOS13.

@Strahany: You can….I'm not sure if were on the same page or not…

For example. I have YouTube open on 1/3 of the screen while I'm browsing on Safari

Or you can do half/half too

              • @Danstar: Last time I checked, you can’t have more than one safari window, or more than one YouTube window (not including YouTube app + browser) or more than one Pages instance, etc

Might be mistaken - haven’t used my iPad in a while.

@Strahany: Not 100% sure what you mean,

Maybe this will show you what you're thinking?

I only tried recently to have multiple windows on the screen

(Mainly showed my son how he can have a game open and a youtube video playing at the same time on his screen. Either by split screen, or on top of the game in the corner)

  • I own a current generation iPad Pro 12.9", this is despite having been an Android user since the original HTC Desire and having never owned an iPhone. It's unfortunate, but I do think that iOS is better than Android for the tablet space now. There just aren't very many good Android tablets. That said, I prefer Android software and I'm always frustrated at the lack of functionality of iOS and the fact that I have to use hacks and workarounds to get it to do what I want, but it works and it works well.

Note that I'm a very "typical" iPad user, not someone who is trying to replace a laptop. I use it for its strengths, which is in reading, web browsing, drawing/writing, watching videos…etc. I use it for light emails and notes, but not for any serious work.

  • For what you need you should look at new iPad air. Cannot see any reason at all why you should spend the extra on iPad pro. Air gives longevity as its brand new and is still overkill for all the things you want to use the tablet for.

I love android on phones (have Samsung s10+ now) but overall iOS offers a better tablet experience IMO.

If Google could sort their shit out chromebooks on tablets could be the game changer. But that's still a way away.

I'd get the iPad Air 10.5- it's basically a refresh of the 2017 Pro. The only thing I don't like about it is the speakers are only on one side. $42/month at Optus right now.

    • The pro also have a better refresh rate for the screen. Been tossing between the pro 10.5 and air 3 … I hate to see that ipads have such good promo on amazon in USA and europe atm but nothing much in australia yet

      • 10.5 for sure for me I'd take the display over one generation of processor any day.

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 64GB Wi-Fi + Cellular 10.5 Black * LIKE NEW * (used)

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/163515020103

I got it for AU $679.20 after 20% ebay coupon (even less if you had ebay gift cards from late last year)

  • Thanks guys. Bought a new Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 10.5" 256GB Wi-Fi with S-Pen - Black for $765 on eBay. Enough storage for my books and lectures. A stylus is included for notes. RRP over $1000.

lol mistake. Whatever we all make them.

  • We've owned Chuwi, Acer, ASUS/Google, Samsung and Ipad. Ipads are by far the best. Apple knows how to design a tablet and market it so that it sells.
