How Far Do You Sit from Your Big TV / Optimal TV Viewing Distance

I’m looking into finally upgrading our $40 40 inch gumtree tv to a 65 inch 4K monster

But I’ve cut out some cardboard with the dimensions of the tv and it seems way huger in our home compared to the shop

I’ve looked at sites like this:

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-r…

And it’s unclear the optimum viewing distance. I think we would be at about 2m from the screen which feels close.

Curious how close people sit to their big screen tvs to get a bit of an immersive experience without feeling too close!?

I have my IKEA wingback chair 240cm away from Sony 60" inch TV flanked by GTK-XB5 speakers on either side and it's absolutely perfect. You'll be fine.

    • Respect. Have you bought a popcorn maker to complete the experience.

  • 65 inch is by no means a monster these days.

    • I was surprised how much bigger it is physically even than a 55 inch.
Though not much bigger than my 10 year old 40 inch with its enormous bezel

Trust me… It'll seem huge as soon as you install it, give it a few days (or a week) and you'll be thinking "Mmmm yeh i could go bigger"

          That's what she said….

  • 65 inch is big.. i was using a projector for many years as cheap a big screen 'tv' but bought a couple of 55" TVs recently… The living area one (2-3m away) is a comfortable size…i put one in the bedroom (1m from the bed) which feels big… I'm using the both for entertainment and as huge pc monitors with 5 inch pro studio speakers and an 8 inch sub. Not designed for movies but great non the less… A lot of good bargains out there now

  • I sit about 2m away. It’s fine. I would sit the same distance away if it was even bigger though.

You get used to it quickly. Lots of models are in the 80 inch category now.

I recently started using a 55" TV as a PC monitor and even 80cm away doesn't feel too big which was unexpected.

    • Same here. 55 as a monitor at 1m is really the limit though.

      +1 to 65 at 2m.

  • Wow that’s all reassuring
Honestly thought I’d feel like I had to turn my head to see cornwrs

Twice the diagonal screen size away

    • 2x is a good rough guide

rtings uses 1.6x as their recommendation based on field of view angle

    • I’ve heard this for uhd and below so you don’t see pixels but apparently for 4K that rule doesn’t apply?

  • We've recently moved to a house where the living room is 4.4m wide and our 65 inch tv , which is now set on top of the fireplace, initially felt too high up and too far away from the couch but after a while, you get used to it. You'll be fine.

    • Far from ideal for sure though

      • We have a 2-way see through fireplace like this one . The tv isn't as high up as it would have been if we had a mantel over the fireplace .The couches aren't up flush against the back wall either. So that does help too.

But you're right , we need a bigger tv :)

    • Same article in my post!

      • Oh, just noticed!

I'm about 2.5m back from my 55 inch. Wishing I had saved for a few more months and bought a 65 inch

Just waiting for my old flat screen to die on me. Then I can partic
ipate in this discussion. Die, voxson, die

    • Been waiting for 2 years for my 9+ years old gumtree purchase $80 Panasonic Plasma 50 inch to do the same. My patience has run out, gonna get a new one in June and will use the old one in the bedroom

The THX standard specifies 40 degree viewing angle is optimum. That's 1.2x the diagonal measurement or 198.12 cm for a 65" screen.

    • Thanks that’s handy :)

  • Really pepends on one's lounge room but in general bigger TVs require a further viewing distance to be optimally placed.
