I thought you need to format it when you first get it.
so if you are only going to format the disk once ever, what's the worry about format time.
choose 'quick format' anyway, and save 90% if the time of a 'normal format'
and it's the same?

Bugger - I am about to sell some 808GB GREEN WD drives. They are good because they aren't advanced format.
Sorry I thought my computer won't not be compatible with SATA 3 so I was desperate to find one. Sorry.

The SATA interface is backwards and forwards compatible with all 3 generations — a SATA2 motherboard can use a SATA3 drive, and vice versa.
1TB as it's too large and takes forever to format.
It's actually pretty quick, if you use the Quick format option instead of the regular format.
When the drive is new and has never been used, you only need to use the Quick Format option when preparing it with Windows.
The difference between a Quick and regular format is explained here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302686
In short, new drives only need quick formats, whereas old drives will need regular formats in order for Windows to detect bad sectors and mark them as unusable.
I thought they were like ddr3 etc. But not now.
Oh well I am looking for a external 2.5 hdd now.
Best bargain is when Staples have the 320GB Verbatim 2.5" for $29.

just get the 1TB - it's not that much bigger than 808GB, so incremental format time is only 25%…. and how frequently do you format anyway ?
