Neigbour Tells Cops I Tampered with Their Car

My neighbour from hell who has been harrassing us ever since we moved in two years ago, by complaining to the council about anything and everything (all thrown out) has now told the police I tampered with their car.

My husband was shocked to get a visit fron two cops last night asking for me saying there is an allegation that I tampered with the neigbours car.

The neighbour who used to park in front of his driveway started parking in front of my house in the last two weeks. I assume to piss us off or to get us to react by doing something to his car.

Over the weekend I saw the RACV come and put air in his tyres and this is when I think he called the cops alleging that I did something to his car.

I didn’t for the record. He has cctv but hasn’t produced any evidence and I am getting cctv from the neigbour opposite.

Yet to talk to the cops but interested to hear and advice of how to handle this.

Really getting sick of them harrassin us by always complaining for no reason to authorities.

Can I lodge a complaint of harrassment to the cops?

Thanks in advance.

Innocent until proven guilty. Don't have to do anything if they can't prove it.

You can. Not sure it will help.

    • Thanks!

Your neighbour can say anything - wheres the proof?

    • +2

      Yup no proof.

  • I know you're probably telling a one-sided story, but why does the neighbour hate you?

IANAL, but if you got money, you can talk to a lawyer if there's a legal way to resolve this. Did you document everything?

Probably a good idea to get CCTV sooner than later.

We have honestly done nothing to annoy them and have good relationships with everyone else on the street, they don’t. They have complained about neighbours opposite them and beside them. The cops themselves and council have told us they have a history of complaints from them.

Thanks yes I think I will get cctv. Don’t have money for a lawyer.

A lawyer wouldn't do anything material to justify their expense anyway.

Probably the best point on this, basically keep a log of all the harassment, discussions with council and police about history and neighbors talking about it.

If police comes to talk to you, tell them theres something up with your neighbor, she harasses everyone, including police, other neighbors etc.

Essentially what will happen is similar to the story of the boy who cries wolf, there will be a point where either council or police will crack and either ignore her or take their own initiative to stop her and you have plenty of data to back them up.

Fence Issue with Neighbour and Council

      • +1

I don’t know. Jealousy I think. They both don’t work and are in the dole. Nothing to do a lot of time on their hands.

        We lowered our fence.

        • You don’t know? Old mate literally linked your post about the fence issue.

          • @Downvoter: She doesn't know why the neighbours hate them, she's stated that many times.

            • +1

@DazMon: Because of what she initially did with the fence.

        • They both don’t work and are in the dole.

          Right.
          Are you a Private Investigator?
Got a report from Social Security stating they are recipients of a benefit?

How do you know they are "in the dole". And more importantly: WHY DO YOU CARE?

For and more importantly (starts screaming in fear) ARE THEY RENTERS ???????

  • call him for over for kava session, after few bowl all will be well.

    • I would but I’m afraid he might poison the kava!

It seems like your neighbour is wasting valuable Police resources.

Sounds like a job for Tracey "Grimmers" Grimshaw

  • +2

Just move. If you fight them they'll probably only get worse.

  • +5

I'm surprised everyone but you has CCTV especially since this has been going for 'two years'.

    Try applying for an AVO

Inform the cops that this person is a serial pest and has been making frivolous complaints. If you have any evidence of the previous complaints to council, this is a good opportunity to help the cops understand this character.

Gently suggest that the cops take an official statement. Tampering with a vehicle is a very serious offence, and falsely reporting with malicious intent is also a very serious offence. Let the cops deal with him.

  • He claims to have CCTV proof that you did it, so ask him to take it to the police to prove that it wasn't you!

  • +2

Don't react to any complaints and stay completely calm and unbiased when talking to police. The police will then hopefully give them a warning about wasting their time and the neighbour will get bored of making complaints.

  • +1

If you know you didn't do it, do nothing about it. If you are questioned by the police just be honest and say you have no idea what your neighbour is talking about. Like others have said, the onus is on the accuser to prove it. If he has proof then he has to put up or shut up. Also ask the police for the complaint/report/whatever it's called number.

It's a total pain, but there is nothing stopping neighbours being assholes. The only thing you can do is refuse to play the game, remember the moment you get angry or try to do something in revenge your neighbour will be the loudest most innocent butter won't melt in his mouth victim ever to be seen on this earth.

I'd also go with some form of video monitoring. I personally have a set up of two very obvious cameras and two pretty well hidden cameras - you'll never regret hiding a camera.

IF neighbour is smart but clearly is not, he would park his car in his driveway where there is a CCTV and not at the front of your house.

At the end of the day, without any proof the neighbour might as well Foxtrot Oscar.

Grow a beard and buy a motorcycle, the Neighbour won't dare to complain about you again.

What am I missing here ? What is wrong with parking in front of your house ? As long as he isn’t blocking your drive?

Did you complain about him parking in front of your house? Sounds like this may never end and if you are renting I would be moving.

    • Your missing the part where the op states "I assume to piss us off" in other words the neighbour is baiting hoping for some sort of bite.

The scenario is piss off your neighbour till they are at breaking point. do something 'seemingly' innocent hoping they crack and react. Take them down.

Not stated but perhaps the OP is forced to park further up the street therefore inconveniencing them for no apparent reason.

The simplest solution here is to tell your mechanic to write them a letter saying that you didn't.

    • Or, even better, his/her Mom should write that letter.

    • +1

      Mechanic, lawyer, whatever.

What exactly is your mechanic going to write to let the neighbour know that you didn’t do anything to his car that he has never seen?

“OP did nothing to your car as he is so mechanically inept he had to have lessons on opening the door”

  • I had to read this a couple of times, hmm, so your husband got the visit from plod but your the suspect, you must be a bad ass.
anyway, first things first, have the plod stated the neighbour has cctv footage of you tampering with the car?
if so, plod will often dribble this line to see if they get a bite/confession and its b/s or they have seen the footage, since you say it wasn't you, calmly tell them they are wasting your time and their resources and to have a great day.
