VPN Should Be Free?

When I think about it , VPNs should be Free:

It must be technically possible to build big VPN communities or networks that provide the same functionality, but between member computers in service as VPN servers.

It would only take part-time access / use of lotsa such computers, with their owners' authorization of course, to make it happen.

(OK, some easy to install [Open Source]) VPN software would be needed, from a Kickstarter project…? Volunteer(s)? Anonymous? etc.

'could be like: "Share your Unused CPU-cycles"networks, but (for those with fast, Unlimited Internet accounts), but for "excess Data"…

What do you think?

PS So many, VPNs out there, at a range of costs. One never really knows "what's in VPN box" you may be paying for… Are you sure you're protected? Is anyone actually checking? How many of the existing VPNs are just rebadged clones of previous ones, with different client software, logo's, "deals" trial periods & quotas?

If it's Not Open Source (or you don't have an honest team of folks to look critically at its code), what do you know…?

Opera has got a VPN in 1 or more of its browsers, but I don't know if you can select a desto land.

Perhaps a community would support the building of a "open, so: known & proven" VPN, whose user community provides the bandwidth it needs to do its job.

KickStarter or GoFund[Us] crowdsourcing might help make this kind of thing happen, ie, IF it hasn't already done so.

    I trust every1, & I have LOTSA money; I'll PAY my good $$ to use a "BLACK-BOX" VPN

I trust every1, but like to "Cut the Cards" I'd happily help crowdsource-fund a VPN

I'll Name in a Comment: an "already built" Crowdsource-Funded, Open Source VPN

  • Pay for a VPN or set up your own
I dont see any need for this post or even casting a vote

    • Setting up your own VPN on a VPS or your own hardware makes no sense. Unless you're connecting from China. Or using public wifi. Or avoiding geoblocks. Or using some obscure logless VPS in an obscure country paid for with an obscure cryptocurrency. Which doesn't seem to be OPs intention.

Of course you could share the VPN with strangers to mask your personal online activity and prey that terrorists and paedophiles don't take up your generous offer. But I don't think facilitators get off that easy…

    Free community run VPN.

I wouldnt use it for anything important though.

  • This is a terrible idea.

    1. Paying someone for a service makes you a paying client.. That offers a range of protections that you don't get with free services or community based offerings.
    2. Lots of VPN services (such as PIA) have been tested in court and haven't handed over any information.
    3. Bandwidth with community VPN setups is a big problem. You only need to try services like TOR to see this in action. While it isn't a VPN as such, it suffers from the same bandwidth issues a community VPN service would.
    4. You'd be giving up all your privacy and security to a random stranger that would be able to sniff and monitor your traffic.. or potentially launch MITM type attacks.
    5. You lose anonymity. One of the most important aspects of VPN services is that the traffic goes into their servers and then comes out via shared IPs. Your traffic gets mixed in with everyone elses and obfuscated.
    6. The biggest issue… If you let strangers use your internet connection, you're putting yourself in a position where you are responsible for their activity. Read up on what it's like to run a TOR exit node to see what your life would be like as a VPN provider.
  • WTF is this thread about?

  • I can't read this.

  • It would be nice to have a browser just for this purpose or maybe an extension or add on that adds the option to participate or use a crowd sourced VPN as that is really the only way you can achieve a free VPN network (yes I know I just essentially said a Virtual Private Network network well in this case Virtual Public Network).

No idea why no one has done one yet and if you start going on about Tor well it is not the easiest browser to use in the world and imho very poorly implemented. No I am talking about a simple and easy to use free VPN crowd sourced style browser with options to either participate in or just use or both etc.

Companies or large bot farms can choose to opt in and share points of connection and exit nodes etc for free or whatever the organisation wishes to use.

Saw the Opera VPN but unsure how good it is and its limitations etc but not keen to try it anytime soon well maybe for some HBO or Hulu etc but unsure.

  • What your really looking for is TOR (not just a browser, it can be used as a VPN as well) but being free, speeds aren't always ideal.

  • The question you want to be asking is 'why should feel the need to have a VPN'?
