Need Help Deciding on Laptop (13-14", Light Editing/Gaming)

  • Total budget: around $1200
  • Size: 13"-14"
  • Weight: max 1.8kg, not ultralight but below 2kg
  • OS: Windows
  • Purpose: Photo editing, light video editing, light gaming
  • Range of games: Company of Heroes 2 or Anno 2205 at med. settings would be nice
  • Connections: (micro)SD Card Reader, 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB-C, power supply via USB-C preferred
  • Preferences: Best specs/value for money and decent battery life. No 2in1 or touch-screen needed
  • Additional notes: Looking for a dedicated GPU, SSD min 256GB, no HDD needed, prefer 16GB RAM but willing to upgrade from 8GB myself if laptop specs allow, backlit Keyboard a plus

Boring text: I spent quite some time looking for a laptop now and can't really decide and don't even know if my research on the models is correct. Laptop has to be portable to a degree, hence my limit is 14". My gaming demands are at the lower mid-range and RAM should be enough to handle multiple tasks incl photo or light video editing. I'm strongly leaning towards Lenovo's E490 i5 as it offers best specs for the lowest price but I'm put off by possible heating issues of last year's model - no use in having the best GPU when it's constantly being throttled. ASUS Zenbook UX430UN seems like my runner-up as only it's GPU really lacks behind (on paper) but I wouldn't like spending $200 more for weaker CPU & GPU. I need your help to settle this and finally decide as I'm driving the people around me mad with laptop specs smalltalk. Thanks for your time!

These are the models I'm considering:

Ideapad S530 (i5-8265U/8GB fix/MX150) $1120
My thoughts: design is very appealing, weight is only 1.2kg, specs could be better, backlit keyboard, RAM cannot be upgraded, GPU seems to be minimum for my needs, USB-C 3.1 Gen2, no card reader (willing to buy external one)

ThinkPad E490 (i5-8265U/8GB/RX 550X) $1000
My thoughts: ugliest design, high weight at at least 1.7kg, seems like best value/specs for money, RAM upgradeable, USB-C for charging, fingerprint reader, possible heating issues throtteling GPU, so far still my favourite

ThinkPad E490 (i7-8565U/8GB/RX 550X) $1200
My thoughts: see E490 i5 above, best specs with a slightly better CPU for $200 extra (worth it?)

ThinkPad E490s (i7-8565U/8GB fix/RX 540X) $1120
My thoughts: prettier design and a bit lighter & slimmer than E490, best CPU, but worst GPU?

ASUS Zenbook UX430UN-GV060R (i7 8550U/16GB/150MX) $1200
My thoughts: Refurbished, great design, only 1.3kg, most RAM, backlit keyboard, CPU ok, GPU seems to be minimum for my needs, runner-up

Asus Zenbook UX430UN-GV135R (i5 8250U/8GB/150MX) $970
My thoughts: Refurbished, same as GV060R above with weaker CPU and less RAM (not upgradeable), unsure if it's worth saving over $200

Check the dell factory outlet, pretty good prices, and some are new or refurb, but all come with one year warranty. I have owned many dell laptops over the years and have not had many problems.

Their inspirons with 1050ti should work fine for your gaming options.

    • Thanks, I've checked the outlet several times but Inspiron are only available with a 1050ti at size 15.6" and a weight well above 2kg so unfortunately they are not an option. The other models offer only a 130MX which is much weaker than 150MX at the same price. I know I can get much better specs for the same price at 15.6" but it still has to fit in my travel bag/backpack which is why I'm struggeling to decide.

Fair enough, but you are probably going to run into problems getting a lightweight at that price with a decent gpu. I will see what else I can find and post back if I see anything.

        • Finding laptops that had a decent enough GPU for my needs has been the smaller problem, as I said MX150 probably could have been just good enough for me. Also the weight was okayish ranging from 1.3 to 1.8kg but I've found video reviews of both my favoured models E490 and Zenbook showing them to heavily throttle their GPU which were otherwise sufficient on paper. Will see if something else will cross my way, thanks for your effort.

Have you considered an older, refurbished Thinkpad?
By going "old" you could upgrade from E-series to T-series. Look at T450 as an example. Be sure to get an IPS FHD screen.

The only let-down will be lack of USB-C connector

Thanks for your suggestion, I looked into refurbished laptops of all kinds but had trouble finding one with the specs I'm looking for, especially a GPU that would fit my needs like the T450 for example. On the other hand I often found that dedicated GPU at this screens size of 14" or smaller would regularly fail in keeping up their performance under load due to heating issues - true for both Lenovo's E490 and Asus' Zenbook.

I haven't really put much attention to screen and build quality but I think it's something I've to strongly consider as well now. A lot of laptops seemed to be a lot better when only compared by specs but still people were praising much more expensive models for their build quality like the XPS. Due to the pretty obvious outcome of the poll I had decided not to buy one before the ebay 20% discount expired tonight which was my personal deadline. I'm still looking for one but probably have to change my requirements to see if a 15" would also be possible or if I've to settle for an integrated GPU…
