Awesome KFC/Southern Fried Powder Blend 1KG, under $10

Most people on this site love KFC, and generally everyone has had a stab at making their own version at home. I'm of the belief that the secret is salt, pepper, msg, and a commercial pressure cooker.

I've always like the Tandacco blend however at $2.60 a packet, it doesn't go far. They used to do a bulk packaccording to their site, which may now have been removed as they have discontinued it (no repeat business via colesworth).

However, I have discovered a few blends at 2 Asian Grocery stores in Newcastle (Kwon and Star-mart?), which sell for @ 7-8 for a 1KG bag.I have seen a smaller pack of a similar item at the Indian grocery store at Green Hills, however, they didn't have much when I went their last.

The brand is called 'Woomtree', and here is a link to an Amazon storeso you can see what the packaging looks like.
I also have a Korean fried powder from Beksul

As yet I haven't located an Aussie distributor.

Good Luck and Enjoy!

  • Nene chicken bro.

  • commercial pressure cooker

Surely the chicken is made in a deep fryer not a pressure cooker?

  • You definitely don't need a pressure cooker to make great fried chicken.

Follow this video, don't worry about the measurements too much just follow the method, normal flour is ok. Important part is to not mix too much. This method works despite looking like it should not.

  • I tried the "Dustin" recipe from this video. Turned out pretty much like KFC. I would add less pepper next time. Summer Savory was a bit of a pain to source. If you have any Iranian shops they will sell it as "Marzeh" and Greek shops will sell it as "Throumbi"

    • Thank you, I found it online also known as sweet fennell. I know we have a few food wholesalers here in Newcastle, but I've not seen this around here.

    • Hi, I picked some up last week. Quite a nice herb.

  • Further to this, I have found one at the Asian Grocers which is a bit Zingerey. It's made by Ottopi.
