I bought an iPhone via phone and paid $30 for courier because a) value of item and b) holiday time constraints.
I received an email notification it’s been sent via normal Australia Post packaging.
What are my rights here? In particular if it gets lost? Would David Jones be liable to send a replacement given they didn’t send via the instructions?

Star track wouldn’t take 3 days either.

Which DJs store did you order it from? If it was interstate e.g. you living in Melbourne and ordering it from Sydney, it definitely wouldn't go via Startrack.

Read my comment. DJs don't use Startrack to send stuff interstate; it's always normal post in that case. Best they can do is Express Post.
@kerfuffle: Yes but Australia Post owns and uses Star Track regulary to do their shipments and deliveries. I quite often have plants posted Australia post from Qld.to Adelaide that travel the entire distance with Star Track. I can't even remember the last time Australia Post delivered a parcel posted thru them to my address.

Yeah I'd ask for your $30 back. No way would Adelaide Central Plaza be able to courier that out to you at store level.
Should probably mention that I know this as I used to work for DJs and part of my role involved logistics.

In terms of your rights you have a right to a refund for the cost between postage cost and cost of the courier.
A goodwill gesture would be to refund the courier charge in full.
