Have You Ever Got The Wrong Change from a Self Serve Checkout?

Ok, so I just was wondering how often it is that the self serve checkouts stuff up and don't give the correct amount of change.

I bought a reduced pizza the other day (was $1.40) and gave the self serve checkout a $2 coin. The receipt and screen told me "Change $0.60" however, I noticed that four 20c coins dropped down, not three.

I am absolutely certain there was not one there before.

Obviously 20 cents isn't that much, but it's got me thinking - how often does this stuff happen?

Alternatively, have you ever been shortchanged by a self serve?

Yes I did make a forum poll out of this, not because of the 20 cents extra I got but out of curiosity if this is an often occurrence.

  • Yeah I did once, and because I picked "no receipt", it took ages as a manager had to come out of his hole and speak to me..

    • Was this being shortchanged? Yeah, would've been a pain to get the manager down..

Out of interest, how did you prove it?

      • Basically my word against theirs.. it was $2.50 too

        • I guess they would've just kept the peace and gave the $2.50
Although I can't imagine it was given the first time you asked..

They have the ability to print the receipt of the last transaction very easily… unless someone else used the machine after you, they were being lazy not to check. They could also have looked at cctv footage to check you didn’t get any change.

All very doable and things I used to do when people disputed the self checkouts when I worked at a coles (some 6 years ago).

      come out of his hole

      ಠ‿ಠ

    • Good lesson to always ask for a receipt.
But what evidence do you have of the amount of money paid????

  • Your pennys got pinched

      Quite the opposite really 😂
      I was given more pennies!

Woolworths is the biggest operating of gaming machines in Australia. (Coles have recently exited that business). It is just a cross over from that.

  • I pay with discounted e-gift cards. Maybe I should start using cash.

    • It only happens in rare chance. You lose money by using cash.

  • Cash, lol. I think at my local often only 2 of twenty self serve registers are cash due to breakage.

    • Really? I'd be interested to see this.

Where this happened there was only around 8 self serves and around 4 of them were cash or card and the other half was card only.

  • You lose at least 7 cents(14 points) by not using eGC.

    • I gained 13 cents this time.
Yeah, I know I probably should be using eGC but it's annoying having bits of cash from here and there.

  • It's happens very rarely. Almost never with notes.

  • It refused to spit out any change when I was at Coles the other night, but it was only 20c so I didn't care.

    • +4

Found the owner of OPs extra 20c

  • The people that wrote it was only this and i didn't mind it was only x amount, should be ashamed. There is a number of reasons why we should be chasing the cash even if just a little. Firstly because of the corp giants they are, they already rip us off enough as it is, we don't need to give them any extra money. Secondly to get the supermarkets to think about removing some or all of these stupid machines. Coles and Woolies aren't paying me to scan their items for them, they should be doing that, biggest reason being that if you make a mistake on the checkout which results in the customer gaining an item for free (stealing) then your the person in trouble, even though coles and woolies haven't trained you to use the self serve checkout

    • +1
Not to mention when they sneak up behind you and look at your self serve checkout screen behind your back to see if you've scanned everything correctly, how annoying is that?

  • Yes I've had them not spit enough coins out before and simply asked the attendant. All solved within a minute.

when i was in the US, i'd break a $100 bill buy buying a $3 item at target (would spit out $10 notes). Then it jammed. Took a while for them to sort it, but got my change.

Change was more. I called over the helicopter assistant and told them I got extra money. She asked how much. I said $1. She said thanks for your honesty and enjoy your extra dollar. I put it in the plastic Labradors head on the way out.

the plastic Labradors head on the way out.

Man I haven't see one of those things in about 10 years.

      • Still at my local coles but I live in a regional town. Maybe it's been forgotten.

        • There's one also at I think local woolies.

    Who pays with cash still?

    • Me obviously.
Nah, to be honest I pay with cash when it's some small amount like $1.40 and the change is just annoying.

The local fruit shop doesn't even accept EFTPOS under $20.

I use my card when it's worth it. I use cash when it isn't.

      • +2

I use my card when it's worth it. I use cash when it isn't.

But we're talking shelf checkouts…… and have no min spend amount :)

      • Turn one $2 coin into four 20c coins, more annoying! I would rather keep $2 coin for other use.

        • Haha you do have a point. I was expecting a 50c and a 10c.

That being said, the four 20 cent coins (and one more) were used to pay for a coffee so it wasn't annoying for that long at least :D

  • I used to work at a retail store on the self serve, and I found every now and then they gave out an extra coin or 2 by accident. They would give a popup for an assistant if there was a coin jam, they didn't dispense or they ran out.

  • This could become a thing. New permotion; Pay in cash at any Woolworths self-service checkout and have chance to win extra change! 20$ jackpot every Friday!

Just one step further toward Idiocracy..

  • One has to wonder what you do with your 'spare' time?!

    • Tbh, what most people on Ozbargain do :P

From what I see, most people on OZB these days spend countless hours in front of McDonald's Kiosks swapping & changing Burgers around in order to save 5¢ or even 20¢, seems they also stand at Self Serve Checkouts putting coins in trying to gain 20¢ extra in change! One would have to assume you went & notified them of this error & gave it back?!

        • -1

Nope, I was rushing for the train as it was. I'm not going to call over the checkout lady to give back 20 cents nor will I leave it in there for the next person.

If you are at a vending machine and 2 packs of chips fall down, do you leave one in there? Or try to flag down station staff and give them a pack?

          • @pennypincher98: What a load of Bullcrap! Simply call(or walk 2 steps over to the Assistant) & hand it to him/her! As for Vending Machines it's more likely you don't get a packet rather than 2, but let's play your game as you move the Goal Posts. All vending machines have Toll Free Contact Numbers on them for this very reason, it's most likely they'll say keep it but it's no different to finding some Old Lady's Purse/Money & keeping it(aka stealing if you don't return it or attempt to find the rightful owner!)

            • -1

@Micko179: Really? You're kicking up that much of a stink from a self serve checkout giving me 20c more than it should?

Do you realise how much Coles makes?

Sure if it was an old lady's purse, or an Opal card for example, I would hand it in (or try to find the owner first).

We are talking about 20 cents. The self serve lady was on the other row helping someone else.

You know how ridiculous it would be to interrupt her to say here's 20 cents! She'd probably just ignore me.

Btw you still haven't answered the vending machine question. You've just changed it to one that suits you.
