  • Suggest VSX-531 for an extra $56.

    Both excellent first AVRs.

    • I suppose you mean this VSX-531 with 130w per-channel, for $375.20 with PEACE code.

      • Yep.

        • Sorry guys, i know next to nothing about amplifiers.
Could you please explain why you would prefer vsx531 over vsx330?
Or why/how would you prefer one amp over the other? What exactly should i be looking for when choosing an amp?
          Thanks!

          • +2

@maiuspala: VSX531 seems to output more power per-channel than VSX330.
There may be a few other extra features on the VSX531 being the higher model, take a screenshot of specifications for both and swipe between them to see if there are any differences.

I bought a nice Yamaha stereo amp to power my first CD player when I had my first job out of high school back in the late eighties that was only 50W RMS per channel ( high dynamic range ).

Back then was $500 from Brachs ( for those older folk who remeber the the music king befoew jb hifi came along )

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brashs

, and that was without remote lol. Long storey short, I loved it and so di all my mates etc, so give you a plus vote for the brand and fond memories lol.

Weighing in over 7Kg must be decent.

    • Hi thank you for your comment.
Nice to hear you were enjoying audio before my physical existence.
We had a Marantz amplifier with matching LS-17A’s back then.
The Amplifier has passed away long ago, but the LS-17A’s are still singing paired to a low-cost modern amplifier.

      • +1

Wow. LS-17A's would kick up a racket. Congrats.

Started out back when E&S Trading entered the game.
Alex Encel was still selling 'fridges to start his first store in Richmond.

Yes unfortunately they are quite miserable in condition, they have been damaged by humidity (left outside at one point when moving) and overall age (part of the rear particle wood is falling apart on one of them).
They still sound great though. 5-way design if I remember correctly (we keep the grills on/they can be a bit garish to look at).
Even at low volumes they are very accurate in reproducing instruments and have a very detailed but easy sound.

  • I have the VSX-S300 Slim and it’s pretty good.

  • Can anyone confirm that the Foxtel IQ4 passes through 4k content through this box or the aforementioned VSX-531?

I have an old VSX-528 and it doesn't, and when searching for Foxtel 4k and the VSX-531 I can't see too much in the positive for it.

    • Sorry I use neither 4K nor cable TV. You should be able to find your answers online though.

      • Seems to be a Poxtel problem.

  • Thanks OP. I am considering to get the vsx-531(with Bluetooth). However unable to do figure out an entry level speakers set as it is very confusing for me. Can someone please post a link to set of compatible speakers(preferably ceiling ones)

    • +1

For budget in-ceiling speakers I don't know if you can go past Selby's

You will need to add a sub to fill out the sound as ceiling speakers aren't really known for their low end unless you build an airtight box above them.

    • +1

Please be aware both AV receivers in this deal are 5.1 surround models.
      As far as I know 5.1 means 2 fronts + 2 rears + centre + sub.
Ceiling speakers are usually reserved for Dolby Atmos.

    • I've been using some cheaper studio acoustics branded ceiling speakers that I bought from Ebay for a Multi-room audio setup, and for the price, they actually sound pretty decent. The 8" model seems to cover a good frequency range, so if you don't want to use a subwoofer for the low frequencies, they might be the ones to go for.

      • Thanks for the details. I will check these out.

  • For those who are a bit stretched, there are 4 pair of refurbished Sony SSF6000 on eBay @ $99 less 5% delivered.
Suitable until funds are available for some decent fronts, center and prolly a sub woofer.
Then just use the Sonys as rears.
July/August/September traditionally sees some decent gear at excellent discounts. Take your time.

    Edit. Two Sonys left :)

      Manufacturer refurbished sounds good.
