Suggestions for SSD NVMe Enclosure?

I recently purchased a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe and I want to be able to use it as an external SSD drive. I'll be mainly using this as my portable Vagrant lab

Can anyone suggest enclosures that would best utilise the Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVMe?

Here is some I've found

https://www.amazon.com.au/USB3-1-Type-C-M-Key-Adapter-905-Bl…
https://www.umart.com.au/Simplecom-SE503-M-2-NVMe-SSD-to-USB…

Being able to support the fastest transfer speeds while maintaining decent temperatures would be important to me.

or https://www.pccasegear.com/products/45486/orico-usb-3-1-gen-… for a decent brand from reputable seller too.

    • Brilliant! I think I might go with this.

  • Was looking into this myself this afternoon. Found the following review on Anandtech that gives an idea of what to look for:

Unfortunately, looks like neither the Pluggable or the mydigital M2X are available via Amazon Au. Seems to be some massive price gouging on quality nvme housings in AU at the moment. Some do ship to Australia, maybe get direct from Amazon US

    • I wasn’t able to find any Pluggable to ship to Sydney, Australia from Amazon US despite the listing saying it was able to ship to Sydney, Australia. Do I need to do something funky to make it work?

      • It's on eBay, not cheap though.

      • I've seen people say they've managed to ship direct from US Amazon. Not sure how to do it myself though. I have an account that was originally setup on US Amazon, but direct purchase from US site not working since the Geoblocking, don't know what the workaround is.

        • This looks interesting.

  • Technical point: you want an M.2 enclosure. M.2 (or 2.5") is the form factor, while NVMe (or SATA) is the protocol. M.2 drives can use SATA and likewise, 2.5" drives can use NVMe, although NVMe drives are usually M.2.

    • 2.5" drives can use NVMe

      Not really.

FWIW, I've been using this one for the last 3 months, without a hitch:

With an OEM Intel drive in it, speeds are pretty fair:

Copying many small files in a backup sync, I can get over 500 files/sec (with Windows Defender enabled, this drops to under 100).

    • This looks tempting and thanks for posting the stats. Did you run this with an NVME SSD?

It's an NVMe-only enclosure, no SATA - the disk was the stock drive out of my Lenovo T580. I replaced it with a 2TB Samsung 970 EVO, bought when I couldn't find a 1TB during the December cashback.

2TB must be a beast and brilliant choice of laptop :)

  • Found my answer here: https://www.reddit.com/r/NewMaxx/comments/fi28o6/sabrent_usb…

Don't buy adapters that use the JMicron JMS583 (USB 3.2 Gen "1x2") bridge chip/controller. JMS583 and ASM2362 are "1x2" (ASM2362 also comes in 2x2 known as "ASM2364" in some cases). Such popular branded ones include those from Sabrent, Orico, Simplecom, Kingwu, etc.

Instead, buy adapters that use USB 3.2 Gen "2x1" bridge chips - these are superior to "1x2." The Realtek RTL9210 is "2x1"

Both "1x2" and "2x1" are 10 Gbps, but they use different types of encoding and lane distribution.
