200,000km service vs 195,000km service?

I bought an 07 Corolla a few months ago (Nov) and see on the service sticker that the next service is due at 195,000km or Feb 2019. The brakes definitely need to be looked at, so I want to take it in for a service.

195k seems like an odd interval, so I was wondering if I should just ask the mechanic for the major service (200k) instead. Is there any con to this? I imagine the price will be higher, but if I'm going to have to get a major service at 200k then I figure I should just do it now.

Any input is appreciated 👍

It probably says 195K because the previous service was done around 185K. The service interval is meant to be every six months or every 10K, whichever comes first (based on my 2011 Corolla)

    • right, I assumed as much. however I am still wondering if I should just get the major 200k service instead. do you have any opinions on that?

Is there a 200k service listed in your service handbook?

I would a get an oil change done ((or do it yourself). 15K vs 10K on the life of the oil that most probably was used (non synthetic) would be losing its viscosity and not protecting the engine from wear. The cost of an oil change is low vs a complete service. Either that or do the 200K service earlier

And where are you taking this for a service? Forget Toyota just use a qualified independent (Friends recommendations)

        • +1. Make sure you get oil changes done at the right intervals. Other things like belts or spark plugs aren't as critical if you wait a bit longer.

So if I was OP I would probably get oil and oil filter changed now (if it's due), and maybe brakes if they need attention.

While the mechanic has it, he will probably recommend if anything else should be done now.

Otherwise major service can be done at 200,000 kms. But check any service records in case any of the major items were already done recently. For example if the timing belt was already done at 180,000 kms then it will not need doing until at least 240,000.

OP - have a look in the owners manual for the maintenance service intervals. It should look something like this…

      • Sorry, can't really offer my opinion on that; I've only done about 74K on it (I get it serviced every six months though).

  • whats the 200k major service? Surprised the book even goes up that far.

Only goes that high in Toyotas. Golfs and the like only go to 100k

      :p

don't care about so-called "200k" or "major" service

ask specifically what/when has been done and what/when needs doing

  • +12

it will be fine as long as you don't miss the 197,348 kms service

Always go over what is recommended. It's in your mechanics best interests to have much shorter service periods than you need

  • I think it would be the much better if you do the major service now at 195,000. It is just the matter of 10k kms up or down. If you do it now you will be able to ride the 10000 km more smoothly on a reliable car and then proceed as in normal service later on.

  • Service should be done on Distance or Time whichever comes soonest.

  • Yes, do it now. Yes, get the 200k items done.

  • Being a second hand car that you haven't serviced yet I would recommend taking it in without hestitation. I wouldn't trust the 'service history' on a used car.

  • It never hurts to do a major service early.

I’m assuming 07 Corolla’s are cambelt driven so it’ll probably need cambelt replaced, other drive belts checked, spark plugs then your usual service stuff, drive belts, filters, fluids etc. if it’s cambelt driven it’s good to get it done slightly before it’s due.

I’d be asking or checking the manual whether the next major service included cambelts etc, and if it does, get it done now

    • You can argue it eventually hurts your bank balance!

The price of a service or the price of an engine

I know what one id pick. Part of owning a car is the cost of the upkeep

        • You’re also comparing apples with apples.

Inevitably, the car will need a major service at 200,000
You’re comparing a minor service now with a major service at 200,000, VS a major service now and a minor service in 5000-10,000 kms.

        • True. I'm particularly sensitive on the topic because of my Honda CRV I posted about recently :(

    • It is timing chain. Plugs will be due, maybe air filter, maybe in tank fuel filter (can't remember the interval on those).

  • Complete 195 now and delay major to 205k unless the mechanic advises differently.

If you don’t know the service history, ie no log books, get the major service done now and know that everything is in the best running order. Alternatively, as it is a high in car and a reliable corolla as well you might just change the oil every 10k km and run it until it dies.

Once you get to that sort of kms the service schedule is often treated as more of a guide than what has to be done, so you can’t be sure the log book servicing is completed fully. The 195k is probably because the figures back a while ago were a bit late or rubbery and the mechanic just recommended 10k more than the last current service.

End of the day keep in up to the service schedule probably won’t make any difference to be resale value, so it’s about keeping it running more than making sure you fill in he log book correctly.
