Electricity: Are Only Peak/Offpeak Plans Available to Solar Households?

Hi,

I am in VIC and shopping around for a new electricity retailer. I have been told by Tango that every household in my Distribution area (Aus-net) that has solar panels must have a peak/off peak rate. Does that sound correct? Also why?

We have a smart meter and are currently with Simply Energy on a peak/off-peak plan. Also we are only eligible for the current-fit (usually 11.3c) solar rebate.

The flat daily usage plans, across most retailers seem to work out cheaper for us, next cheapest is flexible pricing ones with shoulder rates. Lumo said after I switch to them I can put in a request to change this. After speaking to Tango, I am not so sure who is correct.

Thanks in advance!

ACCC says most consumers have no idea what they are buying, so they listen to con artists via websites or by directly talking to them, who tell them their rates are going down as they go up.

Some crazy neoliberals are still insisting that the privatised electricity system is working great even after the ACCC said it was an unacceptable, unsustainable economic and social disaster.

    • And your point is?

When you have Solar, SPAusnet will force you to use ToU (Time Of Use Tarriff). I am not sure for other distribution network but for SPAusnet residences, this is mandated.

  • Do you have a proper smart meter or a digital interval meter?

Do you mean for the electricity you buy or the electricity you are feeding into the grid?

It's a proper remotely read smart meter. The electricity we buy is on peak/off-peak.
