Using NBN Modem with Another Provider

I have NBN from TPG and it is good. I was also using a modem from TPG as well. Recently I found a cheaper and better offer and now I am thinking about changing it. Can I use my NBN modem (from TPG) with another provider? I know phones can be locked to a provider so not sure if it would be same for modems.

  • It helps to provide your nbn modem model.

  • What type of NBN connection is it? Will you be using the landline phone or just internet?

  • log in and view the connection settings.

  • If you only have one device on the NBN… yes… IF…. connect the cable from the wall straight into the PC/Laptop. Setup with login details… no modem/router needed.

    Yes… IF

  • I’m currently using a TPG provided NBN modem with Kogan NBN. It’s a TPLink Archer 1600v iirc. Just needed to make some small config changes within the modem as per Kogan’s FAQ’s/BYO modem info.

    Pretty easily done 😎

Even though I was provided with a free Kogan NBN modem, I opted for this as the TPG modem fitted better in the space where I keep the modem, and I think the TPG was better spec’d after doing some googling.

    • How does Kogan compare to TPG in terms of speed and reliability?

      • Well, can’t really compare in terms of speeds as TPG was their NBN 12, whereas I’m now on Kogan NBN 50.

TPG was giving about 10mbps and shitty 1mbps upload. $59.99 a month.

Kogan gets me about 30-36mbps consistently and about 15-17 upload. $65.90 a month. I’m pretty content with the speeds.

Only drop out I’ve had so far was about three weeks into Kogan, but that drop out was NBN Co’s fault as it was an area outage.

As with all NBN connections, YMMV depending on the NBN solutions used and location etc. I’m using HCF as that’s all I get in my very old well established area/suburb!

  • Thanks guys. It's the tp-link archer AC1600. How do you rate this modem. I will also try checking out it's config.

  • I've had no issues using an iiNet supplied router left by previous occupants (ISP Sky Mesh, nbn satellite).

  • +1

    Thanks everyone for advice
