Red Energy increasing rates 10-20% eff 15APR

My Electricity and Gas provider in NSW Metro is increasing rates quite significantly

  • Gas first two steps are +12% and +21%
  • Electricity peak +12%, shoulder +10%, off-peak +24%

Obviously time to change, and I've got two questions:

  1. Do I have to pay the disconnection fee if I'm changing distributors (but staying in the same house … & moving at the time of the meter reading?)
  2. Anyone used simplyenergy or click energy - seem to have best rates

Thanks everyone

    1. What does your red energy contract state?

    2. I'm on the simply/racv deal. Prices just went up also.

2a. I'm looking at tango monthly direct debit deal. Looks cheapest at the moment for me.

  • Hey where did you see they're raising rates I haven't seen them mention anything yet

  • I was about to join red energy and now they are going to increase prices.
Any other cheaper supplier I can check out for Sydney? Tango is cheap but they are VIC only.

  • Wattever.com.au

    Energymadeeasy.gov.au

Simply Energy and Momentum seem to be the cheapest in Sydney atm. Even AGL, Powershop and Alinta are cheaper than Red right now.

Ring / online chat with Red and tell them you are moving on if they can't offer a competitive rate. I did it this morning with Amaysim (same deal, 20% price rise) and they have come through with a great offer (too good to be true and I have asked several questions in writing).

EDIT: There should be no disconnection fee. Recommend you DIY a meter read and compaare with final bill

    • I called red energy and told them that i was planing on leaving.
There's nothing they can do - apparently. Goodbye!

    • Thanks. Haven't gotten a letter yet hopefully they aren't raising mines lol.

      • Will you get a letter? Simplyenergy just had a small note on the front page of my last bill with the new rates.

    • Letter or email?
I've only been with them for a month and now rate increase. It's worst than amaysim.

    • You won't get a lot of price differentiation with gas. I believe it's more regulated?

My gas & electric all went up in March. I figure if I pay a little extra for a month or two then it's no big financial impost as I don't use a great deal.

I'm a red energy customer too. Not happy at the increase.

Looking into reamped energy for replacement. Thoughts?

    • Moved to ReAmped recently.. very good decision made.

  • Based on our recently installed solar setup I've put in application to move to agls solar saver deal

This last bill would have been about 300 bucks better off due to fit over summer.
Should be about break even over winter.

    • When my GF fitted the solar last september I switched her to AGL Solar Savers as she was already an AGL customer and it was a quick and easy process. I think there might have been a couple of marginally better options from other providers but she was happy with AGL and I didn't want to go to another provider that was going to cause problems. Her first full bill was a $350 turn-around.

  • I can say that I've been with Red Energy for over 2 years. Had no problems at all. And whenever I've used the comparison websites (Wattever, EnergyMadeEasy) my plan (26% disc) on Simply Energy has always came out on top. I do note, however, that my last bill said that the plan costs may be changing on 1 July.

      What
You say red energy and now you say simply entergy?

  • Im with red, seriously going to change, they're already ridiculously insanely priced.

  • I received price increase letter yesterday. :(. Time to switch.

  • Red's rate isn't that great, I switch my electricity to Lumo as soon as Lumo Amex deal popup (ironically Lumo is sort of vic division of Red), my gas account still in credit enough till winter thanks to their amex offer, probably about time to start looking for the cheaper one.
