Tips of Selling Things?

I'm clearing out my house at the moment and have a bunch of things I could sell (e.g. old game consoles, action figures, exercise machines, etc.)

I could simply chuck them out but the OzBargain in me is telling me to sell them.

Any tips of selling used things that would still have some value?

Would eBay or GumTree be the way to go?

Thanks

Before selling i would go on ebay and see what the items are selling for

Some action figures and old games could be worth something

See what they actually sold for in the last few months, not what people wish they could sell them for. I hate it when I want to buy something off someone and they are like, well they go for $300 on eBay. But they don't, the completed listings only go for $140, the $300 listings never sold.

    Is it worth your time?

    Yes - do it.

    No - don't.

    Cash only.

If you value your time and sanity, cash converters offer half market price but at least it's done and dusted. For some items it's worth just firing and forgetting. Ebay fees are very high now…about 20% with Paypal fees. If you get a return it's complex. I find ebay a whole lot of waiting in Post Offices and messing with cheery emails. It's time consuming and you can still get ripped off and posting is unreliable. I think side by side, you'd be better off dumping stuff at CC and working minimum wage flipping burgers with all the time wasted on ebay for standard items.

I'd rather donate stuff to charity than get low balled on gumtree.

    • It’s not hard to ignore lowball offers. I’ve sold plenty on gumtree and I’d rather any amount of cash in my pocket then none at all if I ended up donating it somewhere.

  • Seems like some of your items are niche (action figures etc). Perhaps there are dedicated fb/fan pages for these types of items?

I've sold a lot of stuff on gumtree recently. Mostly furniture, baby stuff, and clothes, but even an old xbox 360 and games, and old light/fan fixtures after a sparky installed some new ones. You will always get low ball offers, but patience sometimes pays off. And you may have to relist some items once or twice if they quickly go down in search ranking.

Dont expect to always sell an item for what you want either. Otherwise you will not sell everything you have.

Note: more than half of buyers will also try to negotiate further with you when they meet you to transact. So keep that in mind too.

I’ve sold a fair few things on gumtree, I haven’t yet had one try to further negotiate when I meet in person.

It’s cash in one hand and show product in another, and say bye, always good to confirm price before final meet up though.

      • I've had a couple do that. Where I have just wanted the item off the lawn (window frames it was fine).

When it was a GPU I said we agreed on a price already and I can sell to the next in line and they just shrugged and paid as agreed.

  • I sell most of my things on Facebook; groups and Marketplace.

Too much hassle. I'll take your action figures and consoles of your hand for a cheap fee.

  • Too much work , can't be bothered. If it was me , I would most likely donate or have a garage sale.

  • Why not both?

Ebay has some free listing promotions on every now and then.

And gumtree is free so doesn't hurt to put it up.

Knock it all out in one day then sit back and relax.

If you have better things to do then yeah just donate it or throw it out.

I am trying to clear some old computer cables and printers and stuff too at my place but cbb tbh researching up prices and honestly feel kind of cheap selling it to people in the area rather than just giving it away for free like a good Samaritan or neighbour.
