Hi guys, mum and I are going for a 2 week escorted tour of China from the middle of May.
Has anyone been there lately and did you need to get vaccinated?
I am 57 and mum is 77.
Thanks for your help…in advance. :)
Vaccinations for China. Yes or No?
Comments
I'd stick with the information on the website you linked. Tour operators are not qualified nor liable for the medical advice.
Thanks GG57…that info was much appreciated.
Thanks to you too tshow..
It depends which part of China you're going to visit, but I highly doubt any specific vaccinations are required. I would be a bit hesitant to follow advice from Travel Doctor. Their business is, after all, trying to sell you as much stuff as possible.
This is a much better bet:
https://smartraveller.gov.au/countries/asia/north/pages/chin…A standard flu vaccination is probably a good idea, as well as applying insect repellent in hot and humid parts of the country. Avoid tap water. You'll be fine.
Thanks Cluster….taken onboard.
- Don't drink tap water. Boil it or buy bottled.
- Avoid dodgy eateries. You should be able to tell with common sense.
- Bring a few masks if you wish, however air quality is generally acceptable around summer.
That's pretty much it. Don't think you'll need any particular vaccination.
Thanks jkcat.
Boil it or buy bottled.
Boiling may kill biological pathogens but won't remove chemical contaminants.
I think we'll stick to bottled water. Thanks thevofa.
Don't drink tap water.
Avoid dodgy eateries. Also avoid ice in any eatery/bar.
Hey we're going over around that time as well, wonder if same tour?
Anyway, I did some research and we wont be getting any extra vax.
Thanks EightImmortals….may I ask what vacs you have had then?
I've had a few vacs a while ago, but mum hasn't had any.
We are leaving on the 17th May with SNA Tours which includes a 4 night cruise on the Yangtze River at the end.
Look familiar?I had whatever they were handing out in the 60's. :)
Your tour DOES sound familiar but we are going with Wendy Wu tours…including a 4 night cruise on the Yangtze. :) (Not sure how the dates line up though as we are leaving on the 21st? Anyway, from what I've read you can get upgrade packages on the Yangtze boat (better food pack or better accommodation)they WILL try to stitch you up on the prices of each but you can haggle price down quite a bit so don't accept the first offer they give you. (Though we will probably get the food upgrade regardless. :) )
Thanks for that darlin….I hope we ALL have a good time. :))
I got the Hepatitis Vaccine.
This is very important when travelling to China, but you need take many courses of the vaccine and I believe it took me a few months to get them all done.
I think it might be too late for you to get this vaccine.
Although, if you are healthy, people say you can gamble as most will recover quickly. Then again you see some previously healthy person with permanent liver damage because of Hepatitis infection. Ask your local GP.
Thanks for that Keepingup.
Yes, if we do need it…we have left it too late.
I have had the Hep vacs a while ago…but I suppose I would need a top up!!
Check with your doctor, not with us.
I definitely will now….but was just asking if anyone has been there recently and if they needed vacs beforehand.
Here is the US CDCs recommendations:
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/chin…
As noted by keeping up, hepatitis vaccine is strongly recommended. Note that there are vaccines for Hep A and Hep B, so check which one you've had previously.
Typhoid is also recommended.
Lastly, whilst not necessary at all, you might consider the rabies vaccine if you are going to come into contact with animals such as monkeys and squirrels (eg. Going to animal Park). The vaccine isn't cheap and only lasts a couple of years, and requires multiple shots so not everyone bothers.
We're not long back from China (it was amazing!).
We had Hep A&B (managed to get the first two in before leaving), typhoid and the DTPa to update our tetanus shots. We went on our GPs recommendation and he had also been there.
Have a great time.
Thanks.. :)
To late for rabies shots.
:( lol
Escorted tours in China require no need for any vaccinations.
Its pretty much like asking if you need vaccinations for Australia except thier medicine is ahead of ours.Relax and enjoy
This is crap advice, all of it.
While the risk is low relative to most other places, there are vaccinations recommended for Australia. Plenty of mosquito-borne diseases here and Japanese encephalitis, tetnus and hepatitis is possible, particularly in the remote areas and/or tropics. And, depending where you're coming from, you may need to prove that you've been vaccinated from certain diseases before you're allowed in, eg Yellow Fever.
How about sticking to the topic instead of all babbling on about all this confusing CRAP!
My advice comes from 2 recent trips to China
I bet you have never been to China
You'd lose that bet. And it was you who brought up Australia as if it was disease free.
On what basis are those on escourted tours immune to disease?
Not sure what you are talking about but just in case ……..Australia does not deny entry to citizens of Australia coming from a yellow fever country who do not have a yellow fever vaccination certificate.
That's true, my comment was aimed more at non-citizens. But, citizen or not, if you've recently been to a listed country, at the very least expect to be quizzed by bio-security. I know I was and I was left with the distinct impression that if I was showing any symptoms then I would have been quarantined.
Mmmm, I think hep A/B is a good idea though.
At your mom's age, I'd play it safe and get vaccinated. Probably not for the exotic diseases, but at least hepatitis and influenza. At that age, even a mild flu can make it difficult for her to continue the trip.
Have a read of the info on this site:
https://www.traveldoctor.com.au/destinations/china
My trips to China were all work-related, so had all the relevant vaccinations. You could also ask your tour operator.
