Apple MacBook Repair. Worth The Price or Look at New Options?

Currently own a 2015 macbook pro

So my macbook keyboard has been water damaged for a while now, albeit only a few keys which were a quick workaround (binding those broken keys to unused keys). But now my battery is acting up and the speakers are 'fuzzy' and it is just unbearable to watch anything off of it now.

I can see from that above link it'll cost me $289 incl. gst to repair the battery but $x and $y to repair the keyboard and speaker. I'm definitely not looking into buying the new macbooks which are north of $3000 now (what in the world?). Don't get me wrong, i'm a huge fan of macbook i think their build and OS are great. Has anyone had a similar experience with repairing macbooks either through apple or a third party?

side note: Dell XPS, Huawei matebook, Xiaomi Mi Notebook are all great options if apple quotes a total repair cost of >$1000 but i'm still attached? to this laptop

  • find a gumtree repairer. They'll source second hand parts and fix it up for a decent price depending on what needs to be done. If you are in Melbourne I can recommend you one.

    • thanks! ill try to source a third party repairer. I'm sydney based! Would you know approximate costs off the top of your head in regards to the 3 items to be repaired?

      • I can't say with any confidence as to costs, but I can guarantee you it will be significantly less than what Apple quotes you given they use second hand parts and take less of a labour cost.

Additionally, I would not trust Apple with an out of warranty device. I would not trust them to diagnose the problem correctly, I've had first hand experience (as with others) of them simply saying the cost would be > a new device.

I've fixed a water damaged macbook air for about ~300 (logic board was cleaned with ultrasonic cleaner and components fixed) when apple said it was not worth a repair since cost was > a new device.

I'd recommend going the Gumtree route first (vs finding a third party bricks and mortar) and getting a quote from those guys, majority do a no fix no fee, so you're safe there. Maybe save your stuff first before you hand it over.

  • My sister went through the same thing. Eventually she gave in and bought a new one (13" with touch bar). Her old one lasted her 7+ years. I have gone through 3 Laptops in the same period(currently on third one which has had the motherboard replaced recently). Her cost of ownership was much lower than what I spent on windows during the same time and ease of service at apple store which is only a few minutes away brought her back. Ironically I refused to buy a Macbook as it was a ripoff then and had advised her against getting one.

  • Recent battery repair experience with Mac Pro at Apple. Great experience. They said they would quote repair price once I dropped it off. The “genus”. What they call certain techs. Said it looked as though I needed a new battery and maybe a new keyboard because of battery. Said cost was approx 300.00 for battery repairs but I would not be charged for that repair and if there is other repairs they would let me know via phone the cost if any. I got call to pick up repaired computer no extra charge. My Mac is only about 31 months old though, but still outside warranty.
Not saying your experience will be the same but better to take it and let them tell you the cost before seeking outside help or new computer.

Honestly I did not know my battery was bad and destroying my computer, I was having graphic contrast issues I could not find how to adjust so thought the graphics card was going bad so I took it in only for that reason and this issue had nothing to do with the battery. I just needed someone to show me where the contrast setting were so I could adjust it myself. I was not able to find the contrast setting. But luckily the knew my battery was a BIG problem and fixed it for nothing.

Give Apple a go on repair, you can always say no thanks if too costly.
