I have been looking at getting a batch brewer for home use for some time and never pulled the trigger on one due to price. The Breville has a fair amount of good reviews and provides more flexibility compared to the Technivorm Moccamaster.

It also appears other places (Retravision) are reducing the price down to $199 so I am not sure what is driving this.

These normally sell for around $400 so this is a great deal if you are into coffee.

Also don't forget cashback!

  • These things are excellent when paired with paper filters and freshly ground coffee. I had the old BCD600 before this and was a bit underwhelmed. This one produces excellent coffee and if you dial it in you can really squeeze the best out of a filter roast due to its blooming and temperature adjustability. If you’re not inclined to tinker with brew recipes then the FAST and STRONG settings will still do wonders. Auto start is brilliant - set and go and it’ll brew right in time for your morning tea break. 9/10 overall.

  • So the pot stays hot all day like a thermos?

Wow how come this sells for $400 and is not even what I'd consider "nice coffee" (espresso and milk etc)

It's a completely different method of brewing the coffee that produces a different flavour profile. Filter coffee allows you to experience the more subtle flavours of certain beans/roasts. Espresso and Filter methods aren't really considered "good" or "bad", they're just different. Also some people don't want a drink that is 20% coffee and 80% milk :) For the record I do enjoy both but sometimes I want a great tasting coffee without the heaviness of the milk.

      • Yeah but I have a plunger that does the same job for $15?

French press produces a slightly different filter coffee taste compared to pour over/batch brew.So even if you compare a french press and a manual pour over it is different in taste.

This machine helps automate the process so you get consistent results each time and at the same time have the flexibility to experience and adjust temperatures and times. As the pour over method is a bit more involved, devices like these help remove variability in the process.

Espresso doesn't need milk. Sometimes I enjoy one from the Caravel, sometimes a pour over, sometimes a siphon. À chacun son goût as my mother used to say.

For those that do take milk, you might enjoy hazelnut milk, if you can find a cafe that uses it. Apparently it works well with many espresso blends.

  • Now $429?

    • Looks like Amazon AU is out of stock and it is now going to a different seller. The Retravision link I posted seems to be available still, however limited locations for pickup so may need to add shipping costs.
