PSU Squeaks!

I have Antec NeoHe 430w PSU. It's probably 5 now. It's fine still, even with my new rig.
Sometimes, it's starting to squeak a little (I think). Probably a fan bearing. Is this something I can lubricate, or do I just live until it's too loud and get a new one?

I don't use much, tho I got a gtx1060 recently.

Need to feed the mouse, poor thing is running like crazy on the wheel

  • You should be able to lubricate most fans. Let it discharge open it up and give it a good clean while you're at it, and check for any signs of capacitor bulging/leaking.

Are you sure it's 5 years old as the model was selling circa 2009/10? If that old, I suggest looking for a new (more efficient) PSU to use in a new rig.

Please don't advise people to open up power supplies. Someone why doesn't know what they are doing can seriously hurt themselves.

OP, it depends on the fan bearing, but it might be able to be lubricated. Plenty of guides around, but be careful, you short a cap, or get some oil in the PSU, your day is going to go badly.

It's most likely coil whine, you cant do much about it.

  • Um, Google indicates that PSU is ~10 years old. It's also a crappy OEM model. Recommended minimum spec for a GTX1060 is 400w so it's right on the borderline.

I'd just be replacing it for a decent new PSU.

  • If you can see a sticker on the moving fan blade, you can quite often pierce the centre to lubricate the bearing with a tiny amount of oil. I do not recommend opening up a computer PSU by yourself.

If you want to check if it is the fan bearing, while the PSU is off and unplugged, put your vacuum cleaner nozzle close. To get it just spinning, not too close at first. Turn the vacuum cleaner off and you should be able to hear if it is the bearing.

  • Bit of WD40 in there should sort it out.
