Looking for a Prepaid Sim for My Parents

My parents moved overseas a few years ago but come back to Australia occasionally. As a result, I moved their original Vodafone plan to a 365 prepaid plan - I believe it was only $20 per recharge and it expires in 365 days. I forgot to recharge recently and so their sim expired. I checked on Vodafone and it seems like that prepaid deal is no longer available so I thought it would be a good chance to explore what else is on the market.

Essentially, they just want to keep their number. They don't really make any calls and mostly use social media apps to message or voice calls. Having said that, data isn't essential - they spend most of their time in areas with wifi and may only need it on rare occasions when they're outside. If they do need to make a phone call, they will use my phone or if they're outside, they'll call me and I'll call them back.

So based on that, hit me with your recommendations. If possible, I would like to stick with reputable companies.

The comments in this post should help.
I don't think much has changed in the last 2 months.

    • Excellent. Wasn't aware of that one. Cheers

Maybe try amaysim pay as you go? Minimum recharge is $10 and last 365 days.

    • Yes, cheapest way to keep your number. Have to make one call every 3mths to keep active. Optus network.

      • You might be thinking of Lyca.

Just checked my old amaysim which ran out of credit last November, still can call into it and account still active.

      • making a call every 3 months might be an issue since they usually take their sims and phones overseas.

If they leave it with me, I'll probably forget at one point

    • Would I be able to "transfer" the previous number across if the Vodafone prepaid sim has expired?

I just registered with Ayamsim and asked for a transfer, they've taken my money but because there has been able 2 weeks since the expiry. I'm worried that someone else may have taken the number already…

Would an error have appeared during the registration process if the transfer was unsuccessful?

  • Wow, sad that the vodafone 365 day plan has gone. That was an excellent service, got my son through highschool for $30 a year (LOL).

Vodafone got rid of the 365 Day Plan and replaced it with 'Pay and Go'.

'Pay and Go' has the option of:

    • $30 (180 days expiry)
    • $40 (365 days expiry)
    • $50 (365 days expiry)
    • Yeah I saw that but it's no longer $20, so I thought I'd shop around first. Not saying that $40 isn't bad for a whole year.
