    From BRISBANE:

    $665 Return - 6 Jun to 6 Jun - https://bookings.beatthatflight.com.au/flights/bne0606tyo060…

Same day or anytime within a year?

    • there are some same day ones - people liked the same-day status runs for Hong Kong, so may as well include it.

      • FYI OP - same day run for Hong Kong is for visa purposes. Doesn't apply for Japan though.

        • And SC.

      • Rep, anything early May? looking at 2 weeks

      • How many SC on a run like this?

        • +1

IIRC it's 60 SC each way, so 120 SC for a round trip ?

  • As someone who can't speak or read anything other than English, is it worth me going? Photos look great, and looks like lots of cool things to do. But if I can't communicate with people I feel like it'll be too hard?

    • You'll be fine.

    • alone or with others?

    • Lol. U will. Be fine man bring Google translate

    • We thought the same as we can't speak Japanese. we were there for 3 weeks and had no issue. Our main concern was ordering food. The place is full of helpful people who speak English. A lot of places either had photos to point to or else English menu. I think they are preparing for the Olympics so now is the time to go explore!

    • with some light background reading you shouldnt have any major issues. itll be mostly staff you interact with and theyre always keen to flex their english skills

    • I think you'll find that 99% of Australians that visit Japan can't speak Japanese beyond a few basic words that they pick up over there. Most Japanese can speak at least a little English. The children learn it in school and many senior citizens learn it as a hobby (and love to chat). Don't let it stop you, it's an amazing place to visit.

    • Everything will be fine, you are very unlikely to get into any sort of trouble there. Pretty safe country… unless nature hates you and decides to have a big shake.

    • You'll have absolutely no problem, I spent 3 weeks in japan and Korea knowing nothing more than greetings, thank you and this please. just make sure you get a sim card or pocket wifi to ensure you have internet access. It can be hard to navigate (the train system mostly) without google maps and it will give you access to translation apps if you need. Most menus have pictures, you can just point to a picture and hold up fingers for how many you want or use very basic japanese like "Kore onegaishimasu" which means this please and point to what you want. Most people we spoke to knew very basic English anyway.

    • Just remember to say O-su-su-me wa nan desuka (what's the recommended food)?
      and Hai (yes)

      Enjoy!

    • Knowing Japanese is not necessary and you'll be totally fine around the main tourist destinations/cities. Japanese have no expectation that you can speak their language and are usually surprised if you can string together more than a few words.

It's when you want to go off the beaten tourist track that you'll start to have terrible. Being able to speak Japanese was definitely a massive advantage for me when travelling the lesser travelled areas for foreigners as everything becomes less English speaker friendly.

Having said that, the Japanese are lovely people and will try their best to help you even if they can't speak any English.

    • Yes I've been a few times and speak zero Japanese. Take Google translate if you really need it.

As long as you can point and nod you'll be OK.

    • I don't speak Japanese, been 3 times without any issues! Plan beforehand and your trip will be very easy. (JR rail pass, train routes, what to do, what to eat etc)

    • if u go niseko, youll find that its basically just another australia haha

    • Been twice in the last year and absolutely loved it. Can't speak any Japanese. everything is well signed in english and a lot of restaurants have english menus. also most Japanese people that i came across could speak some english.

  • Pretty bad time to go… Hot season

    • Excuse my ignorance but what's wrong with that? Does it get real humid?

      • +1

yea just as hot as australia. pretty good time to go to okinawa though

        • Nowhere near as hot but 100% humidity means even high 20's is intolerable.

          • @Cyphar: pretty sure, just off the top of my head, that high 30s in some parts of japan definitely happens

            • @belongsinforums: They do but they are not the norm. Only happens a few times every Summer much like mid 40's in Australia.

              • @Cyphar: right. you would hate north east queensland. all the heat AND the humidity

                • @belongsinforums: Why would I hate it? More specifically, why have you made that assumption?

I head up there all the time for work. The humidity & heat is no worse than Indonesia/Singapore/KL. Japan's has certainly felt far worse in the heat.

      • Yes it's kinda gross haha

      • -1

Yes. Really hot and humid my daughter (then 5 years old) got a nose bleed. I'm never again going back in the middle of summer.

        • Yeah jumping between hot and cool can do that anywhere.

        • Yep, the 100% humidity means that the body's sweat can't cool it down. Body begins to overheat and a nosebleed is one of the big signs of that. Smart move!

      • Around mid 30's and 80% humidity every day.

    • May can still be quite nice if you can find flights then. I found a few from Melbourne mid May.

  • +1

OP. Why never any good deals for Perth to Tokyo?

    • ANA start flying direct Perth - Tokyo from September 1st. Introductory special is about $840 return for economy.

      • lol… meanwhile this deal is ~$650

        • lol.. meanwhile I just checked BeatThatFlight and found dates in May that were cheaper than $650 for Perth to Tokyo, so you’re not trying very hard. But for those who want direct flights, they’re available on ANA from September 1.

        • How's that funny?

  • Last year it was about $570 something…

  • +2

Oct nov is better time for travel

  • -3

    Great deal!

    • +1

      Associated?

  • Great deal for a direct flight. Shame it's limited to Summer which is the cyclone season…

  • jetstar have annual sales Oz to Japan for ~$350

    • +2

Full service carrier, food, baggage, likely direct flights, choice of Haneda or Narita>Jetstar
If you want lots of baggage allowance, Jetstar comes out to almost the same/the extra $100-$150 is nothing in the grand scheme of the trip when you can fly direct (just eat out a few less times in the months prior and can easily save that amount!).

Or, haven't done it myself but is it generally an ok experience to make a stop since Japan isn't thaat far?

      • +1

        I've done it 3 times.

We only take one suitcase between the 4 of us. (how much crap do people need??!!)
fly out of GC. stock up on food before (subway, chips, snacks).
fill up 1.25 litre softdrink bottles with water once through customs.
bring books, puzzles, stick some TV series/movies on the kids phones (headphones provided).

        $350 vs $650.

        with 4 pax = $1400 vs $2600

$1200 price difference. that's accommodation for a week and food.

I'm happy for everyone else to fly qantas or other full service airline.

means less demand for jetstar tickets.

    • +3

bogan airways have annual sales Oz to Japan for ~$350

      FTFY

      • They're all at Bali though aren't they?

      • Oh nice! You're a comedic legend

  • Only if I could get one way tickets from Tokyo to Sydney. Been looking for the past few days but still seems to be $800+ one way…

    • +5

Perhaps buy the return but don't use the return flight.

  • +1

Waiting for some early September flights 😭

  • Hmm nothing for end of july/early August from Sydney?

  • Bleh. Summer. I'd even hesitate if they were offering return for free.

  • Can't find this price for Brisbane
    $678 Return - 11 Nov to 25 Nov

  • Leaving this Friday and ticket cost me around $1000. This deal is good price for full service airline.
