Looking for Recommendations on a Bargain Desktop PC

Always seem to get expired deals or out of stock specials. Am looking for probably Tower only unless it's an outstanding deal. Do a fair bit of Graphic Design so needs to have a bit of grunt (i7 16-32gb ram etc) prefer NVMe 2 SSD.

Recommendations Guys & Gals?

  • Would you be okay with refurbs and second hand?
Might be able to get a decent deal off eBay or Gumtree.

Tech enthusiasts generally suggest building your own from parts, that way it matches your needs and can actually (not always) be cheaper.
Putting it together is fairly simple, plug the things where they fit, essentially.
You can pick the parts from a shop that'll assemble it for a $50 fee, or pick and choose parts from different places for maximum savings and put together yourself.

Do you need it prebuilt? Is budget a priority?

    • I can put it together myself (& would prefer to do so as every Tower I've had built has been a useless brick) last one I bought from Aldi was several years ago(bought it as a backup & has Blue screened & froze since being taken out of the box(was well out of warranty by the time it was opened)). Budget isn't really an issue but being on OZB obviously I want it to be a 'Bargain'. I've been trying to get one of the Ex Gov type ones that pop up on here occasionally & go from there.

  • +1

    What's your budget?

    • Budget is open but looking for a bargain.

  • if you’re okay to wait a few months, techfast usually have good deals going. only issue with their pcs is the unknown psu. so you might need to replace that later on.

    • Yes in no hurry but when I get notification of these sales they're usually Sold Out or expired by that time hence this post. Swapping out PSU wouldn't be an issue. 😊

  • You won't always find bargains that are reliable at the same time :) If you don't yet have a budget, ask for a few quotes or assemble a list of parts you want and then evaluate your options as you'll also get an idea about costs

Aldi is probably not a supplier of good computers, although they do work…well, not always as you seem to acknowledge yourself
This also applies to other off the shelf systems, unless you know what's in them and compare to custom quotes as above.

Having a good custom builder do it for you can take the hassle out of warranty and support when you run into issues vs doing it yourself. They should also be able to guide you in optimising your configuration based on your requirements - see below.

Lastly, state your type of graphics work / software you are using and even your current hardware. What makes you look for a new system?

    • What I mean by bargain is, it doesn't have to be the latest most powerful Gaming Graphics Card or Motherboard etc. Most PC's I've built have decent CPU's & big Ram. Maybe you misread I don't have a Budget (it's open) It needs to be able to run Corel, Flexi, Photoshop, Magix etc.what would suit me is a second hand Gaming PC that's 'last years best' type of thing that they want to upgrade to the latest & greatest. I'd buy a new gaming tower except they all seem to come with those stupid flashing coloured LED's everywhere(I need functionality, not Xmas lights)

  • For photo editing you'd normally look for high core speeds over number of cores, so Intel is still ahead in this area. You mention previous / last year best so that would be an 8th gen i7-8700.
Thing is with Intel, it's harder to upgrade given they tend to introduce new chipsets / motherboards for each CPU generation.

This is where AMD comes in as they make motherboards compatible with multiple CPU generations. Ryzen 5 2600 might be a good choice, but it won't match Intel's performance for the apps you mentioned

You won't need a powerful GPU, an entry GTX 1050 or AMD RX 560 should do the trick, unless you just want Intel's integrated graphics - it'll work, but it has its limits.

16GB is probably recommended or go with 8GB and leave room for another 8GB if you find it's not enough - you should be able to gauge the amount you need on your current system.
Storage capacity again is up to you, SSDs including the NVme interface versions have dropped in price significantly

The PSU, well this a weak spot with generic builds or second hand ones. Avoid builds with no name supplies or over 3-4 years old, think about replacing them - you may have the greatest parts in that system, but if the PSU fails it may take the rest of the system to the dumpster.

In terms of RGB, indeed most suppliers will include them in their gaming builds, but this is where a custom builder comes in - you tell them what you want and if it's no RGB, they won't do RGB then :)
Or you can do it yourself of course, save the build fee but also have to deal with warranty issues and so on.

Some shops do have other systems outside of gaming, the workstation type aimed at more professional workflows.

    Good luck

    • Yeah I'd like to stick with Intel simply because AMD Reliability/track record but not being able to upgrade is a bit of a worry. Most of the pre built systems I've seen at the likes of Umart & mwave etc don't do much for me🤔
