Accepting PayPal Payments from Overseas

Quick question for the PayPal professionals…

I'm setting up an event in NZ and need to offer PayPal payments to my AU account. No problem there, but I'm aware that by default PayPal doesn't offer a great exchange rate. I'll probably send out PayPal invoices that I assume most will pay by card, and I'd like to assist by offering some info on the most cost effective way to pay. I seem to remember you used to be able to nominate the card exchange rate rather than PayPals somehow, but this might be buried somewhere obscure?

If anyone has any tips or suggestions on how to avoid exchange rate ripoffs, I would be very grateful :)

    Hi,
Eventbrite says "Accept credit and debit cards without a merchant account using Eventbrite's PCI-compliant payment processor, and pass your fees to attendees."
A$0.49 + 2% / per paid ticket. Free for free tickets

    • Hi. Thanks but I'm trying to keep costs down for attendees as well as myself :)

  • Just be careful of events, prepaid tickets and paypal. Sometimes they like to freeze the account to investigate it is a scam… disaster for the event.

What about a TransferWise borderless account.
It gives you a NZ bank account number

  • I will probably just ask for a deposit, and the rest can be paid in cash on the day. There will only be around 6 people. The upfront deposit will need to be paid to me in AU. I have a Citibank Plus account that they can pay into by funds transfer (preferred by me), but I'm sure that some will want to pay by card. I have a PayPal merchant account. Maybe I should just bill them in NZ$ and wear the losses myself :(.

  • But the buyer is the one footing for paypal's exchange rate, you still get the full price of whatever their currency is converted to… They could always pay with another method such s a credit card that has decent rate and no overseas transaction fees…if you're that worried about them…

    • But if I invoice them in NZ$, that's what will go into my account, correct? Minus my merchant fees. Then I will pay a % to convert to AUD within my PayPal account.

….why are you invoicing them in NZ$ currency? I would have just invoice them in my own local currency(In this case AUD) if I was selling stuff, even internationally, they can deal with postage(unless it's free, compliments of myself or if I just feel like footing the fee for into the sell price altogether), currency conversion rate and other fees…….not my issue to deal with……

That way the buyer is the one footing all that…hee hee hee….

        • Hmmm true… but you know how NZers feel about us high handed Aussies ;)

          • @Sweet3st: I guess…if you prefer to put your customers first than yourself….
