Can I Collect Bamboo on Government Land?

I need a bit of bamboo for some aquarium projects I'm doing.

I know of this area 30min drive away from my place that has it growing wild next to a stream. I googled if the land was owned by the house next to it and found out it's not growing on their property but it's on the side of their driveway. I don't know how long it has been there, but it looked like an old plant when I first drove past it 20 years ago. Either they or one of the previous owners planted it there or a random who thought planting bamboo right there there would look good (it does), because I highly doubt the government would plant bamboo.

Here is the drive way, property line and tree.

I want to know. can I cut some down since its on government land and it's not a native plant? Do the people have any right to the plant next to their driveway?

Check if it's designated an invasive species weed for your area.

You can grow it from just a small cutting and it obviously grows quite fast.

  • Just because its government or Crown land - doesn’t mean “we the people” can take something from it. Perhaps ask council or buy some?

Ask the occupants of the property if you may take cuttings.

    • but if they say no… they are just saying that because it makes their driveway look nice. but they dont own it. so… if i take it after they say no they will be pissed.

and if they say yeah u can have some.. i have to ask everytime. even though they have nothing to do with it. then they might say no after a while. then they will be pissed if i keep taking it.

but if i dont ask. there might be a mutuall understanding that its not theirs so they wont mind….or is it theirs?

  • This is interesting for Queensland, where bamboo is invasive but not restricted or prohibited:

"Bamboo is not a prohibited or restricted invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014. However, by law, everyone has a general biosecurity obligation (GBO) to take reasonable and practical steps to minimise the risks associated with invasive plants and animals under their control."

  • As you live on the Goldie take a drive out to Weedons crossing bridge at Nerang, there used to be a stand of bamboo growing there when I lived there 20 yrs ago (Nerang side heading towards the High School) but don't know if its there now they did road work on the bridge perhaps park and walk down to the river it may be there on the lower level near the weir
