Because my new NBN connection has been flaky, I am using my old phone (with Belong sim) tethered to my Asus router for internet. Speed seems pretty good, up to 30Mbps. My question is why do people buy 4G modems? Is it because modems are more reliable or faster? Or is it for people who don't have a separate wifi router?

Thanks, now I know what to do with these modem deals!
The best modem deal going at the moment is the B525 available on the recent Exetel deal $139 on their month to month plan.

My E5186 is getting around 100mbps thanks to a roof mounted antenna, so there's a considerable speed advantage with the right setup.
There's definitely also a reliability factor not having an old phone on charge permanently and the E5186 has proper Bridge Mode so I'm not sitting behind essentially triple NAT (the CGNAT of the 4G connection plus the modem, plus the router.)
