Is RAM That Won't Work in Ryzen Defective?

I bought RAM for a Threadripper build that was in the motherboard vendor's recommended list but it randomly bluescreens and stuffs up the BIOS so it needs to be reset.

It hasn't crashed yet in an Intel PC though and the Ryzen is fine with other RAM.

Should the RAM vendor replace or refund in this situation?

Perhaps this is a sign that you should not own a computer, as having one requires electricity which is expensive due to all the foolish Liberal Party voters who wanted to have lower electricity prices. Plus the graphics card is likely full of government funded tracking equipment that will allow them to target all of the experiences that you have in your life to better control your choices and take away your free will.

    • This is more like it.

I wondered WTF is this about….then I saw who the OP was LOL.

This is one of the first things I read after going on an internet fast for one day.

Is the RAM you purchased on the compatibility list for your hardware? From memory Ryzen is fairly picky which RAM it'll work with…

      • Ah, right, obvious miss there…

    Does memtest show errors?

Is the ram advertised as amd ram the way some like g.skill flare x series?

    • No.

Assuming that "no" applied to the memtest question, then you don't have a problem with RAM.

If that RAM doesn't work well with the motherboard, it will show through memtest. If you believe this suggestion is incorrect, you can run the RAM at a slower speed to confirm the issue is gone, indicating a RAM compatibility problem.

EDIT: Case in point with my 2600X and B450. I bought generic 3200mhz RAM that isn't on the QVL. It does cause memtest errors at 3200mhz, but not at 2933mhz. Nothing I can do about it, I got unlucky. I am replacing it with AMD marketed RAM, which is also on the QVL. If it causes memtest errors, I can absolutely do something about it.

        • As is sometimes the way, my brand new AMD marketed RAM, which is on the QVL, is experiencing memory errors.

At least I can now expect support from vendors.

        • I meant no it wasn't sold as "AMD compatible"

This is what happens when the fools vote for Labour and Liberal. Governments keep on promising RAM compatibility for decades but nobody is being held accountable!

  • I'd lower the speed like suggested above. Then it could be not having the latest updates on the chip set or bios.

  • Lower RAM speed at BIOS to the same speed which it runs on the Intel setup.
    Otherwise Bazinga!

Rams are sentient beings with intrinsic worth. The welfare of a Ram should be respected with regard to both the survival of species and the protection of individual Ram.

Should the RAM vendor replace or refund in this situation?

What about Ram rights and its freedom? Typical liberal/labour voter.

Try updating your bios to the latest version and make sure you have up to date drivers. If you BSOD when installing. Burn the driver to an ISO and mount it on boot.

  • Ok guys I believe we've all had our laugh, op posted for help so let's help him guys :).

  • Hey op,

I'd run memtest for errors, if memtest finds errors then the ram is faulty.
If ram checks out ok update the bios and drivers.
If the ram still isn't working with the threadripper I'd then be suspecting the motherboard manufacturer incorrectly listed the ram as compatible when it's not.

    • Or it's not the RAM that's faulty.

OP is seeing bluescreens, plenty of other components could cause this issue. Especially when he says the RAM works fine in another PC. Has he tried the graphics card in another PC? Has he checked his PSU supplies enough power?

      • Op said 'the Ryzen is fine with other RAM.'.

        • Yes, but that doesn't mean the problematic ram is compatible. OP still hasn't mentioned the specific model and brand.

  • Op are you on the latest bios version for your motherboard?

Have you disabled xmp and tried running the ram at stock to see if it is defective or just clocked too high making it unstable?

  • I love how nobody has asked the most screamingly obvious question - what is the model number of the RAM and motherboard?
