Are You a Tenant and Locked Yourself out of Your Rented Property?

If you are renting, have you ever locked yourself out of your own rented property?

And if so, how do you get back into the Unit, and how much would it cost?

Particularly interested with those living in gated Complex and apartments with security system.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • I was in a private rental, and locked myself out but I was still in the hallway. I called a locksmith and they came. The locksmith was having issues and was making a lot of banging noises - my brave neighbours called the cops on us lol… once I got in I had to prove I was living there. I paid 120 bucks!

  • Always have a spare set of keys stashed somewhere outside.

Don't forget to put them back immediately after use!

  • lol woot? just ask property agent or if you are renting directly thru the landlord, go and get the keys urself?

  • Someone I know was locked out in a shared house from their room, I made 2x tensioners at work and a pick, then picked the lock after watching a few YouTube videos. I felt pretty cool tbh.

  • I'm not renting but I locked myself out a few months ago. I had to jump a fence and then break in through my ensuite window. I couldnt get the fly screen off so I ripped it open and fixed it later.

A friend of mine was locked out and climbed on the roof and took tiles off, ended up getting in through the man hole.

Funnily enough it's impossible to lock myself out. The door simply does not lock on it's own it must be done with a key. Why are doors not more like this?

  • If you're in Newcastle, I would hit up pegaxs and ask for some assistance. (OzBargain locksmith)

  • We need to call the locksmith ourselves and pay whatever callout fee they charge, usually extra during weekends and late nights. For gated complexes, you would need some neighbour to let you in the main gate and have the locksmith work on the house door.
Recently our friends paid $150 fee during the evening hours.
