Looking for a decent phone on a ~$29 cap

Hey guys,

Im looking for a smartphone that isnt laggy (something like the HTC Trophy) on a $29ish dollar cap. What would be the best value for money available at the moment? Would you recommend the Vodafone $29 cap?

I want to use my phone primarily for texting, calling and im not going to lie, i'd probably browse facebook a lot throughout the day as well :P

Thanks guys :)

if you want to use your phone for the tasks you mentioned, perhaps avoid vodafone!

in my opinion, this is a decent phone, decent network (optus) and seems like you get good value with the cap, some would argue 300mb is too little, but even when i try to use up my data i can only get near 300mb..if you start watching vids, downloading clips etc, then sure you will probably need more but for fb/browsing it is plenty. HTH

edit: with the discount available on the website, work out to ~34 a month over 2 years, which is pretty close to the 29 you're after.

    • TBH, im really keen on a windows phone for some reason. The simplicity and fluidity of the UI really attracts me.

And is Vodafone really THAT bad of a network? I heard they implemented a 2billion dollar upgrade so it should gradually get better?

And i still think $34 is a little over my price range. I'd like something a little cheaper tbh. Any other options?

      thanks alot :D

      • not too sure what you're other options are then? get the trophy on the 29 voda cap, it seems to tick all the boxes for you? I don't know too much about w7 phones, other than the trophy which seems like a good buy.

as for vodafone - i only know what i hear from friends/see in the media..i would avoid them if possible - no idea how the upgrades are going though.

      • There aren't many WinPho7 handsets out, so if the Trophy is available at that pricepoint it's about as good as you'll get. (WP7 demands pretty high specs, so I'm surprised there are any on a $29 Cap to be honest!).
        In Android:
Optus has the Samsung Galaxy S on their $29Cap.. Easily the best value hardware at the moment (and has been since it was launched about a year ago).
Nexus S is also on the $29 Cap on Voda. It's very similar to the Galaxy S with a lower quality screen, but better software support

Be aware that the network upgrades on Voda are primarily for iPhone users.. They're expanding the network with 850MHz 3G towers which the Trophy (in Australia) doesn't support. The iPhone is one of the few (if not the only) handsets that Vodafone sells that can see 850MHz 3G.
The advantage for everyone of course will be that some of the iPhone traffic will be moved onto that 850MHz network, therefore reducing the load on the rest of the network.. But it'll be the iPhone users that see the most benefit.

  • My partner just got an iphone 3gs from 3 on a $29 cap. They are advertising it for $29 plus $5 for the phone, but she talked them out of the $5 really easily.
