I found this post over at Metblogs Melbourne about saving fuel at gas stations. I thought it might be relevant to the overall context of bargains even though its not strictly a bargain :

Thermal expansion has already been compensated for in Australia. I'd like to give you a reference, but so far I cannot find one.
You are very correct, but this is for the petrol station not the consumer
Some good tips, but this is based on US info so some info is not relevant. Note references to gallon and gasoline (vs Petrol and Litres)
Our pumps don't have the return feature which has impact as in para's 1, 5 or 6
The tip about buying in the morning is ok, but the temperature affect is minimal as the tanks are buried underground so heat of day has little impact. It has more impact on the delivery of fuel by a tanker, as it can be heated.
So this leads to the important point - dont buy fuel when tanker has just delivered, the stirring up is not just crud and water it can also aerate the fuel, and also warm the fuel - as it's hot going in.
This leads to the early morning advantage, as even if there had been a delivery tankers delivering overnight would have cooler fuel.
