[AMA] I've Been Working at Front Counter @ Maccas for Way Too Long! Ask Me Anything

I did an AMA 5 months ago when I was still quite fresh and inexperienced with Maccas work ethics.

Time to give it a go again! A casual employee at Maccas at Front Counter, serving the customers all day long! Open to all questions.

    • I've had people order a Big Mac with 5 extra 10:1 patties. It was barely closed. That manager should've been fired, the customer orders what they feel the need to order!

  • What are the most free extra's you can get in a meal? For example, I know you can get extra pickles, sauce and swap a drink for a water in the $3 cheeseburger meal.

I remember the CYT days, people were ordering heaps of extras for free…

Basically all the above mentioned. Extra pickles, onions etc.

This works, but I've never done it due to the greed.
You could order a $3 Small Cheeseburger meal, swap it out for a water & salad (if you really wanted) - then get the $1 Large Fries. With a new account; you get a free McFlurry with any purchase. Therefore, get a condiment sauce such as a Sweet and Sour and use that code to get a free McFlurry.

This results in a Cheeseburger, garden salad, 600ml Cool Ridge water, large fries, McFlurry and a sauce for $4.50.

  • Does the incessant beeping of the fries being done get to you after a while?

That's all I got. It gets to me.

PS good work for not being a lazy bugger like I was at high school. Got my first job during uni as a waiter in a food court cafe. It sucked and was awesome at the same time.

Best thing about entry level jobs is that later on when studying or starting your own business, the knowledge that the alternative is to stay in hospitality/entry level stuff is a strong motivator.

    • It never gets to me. I'm used to the noise that it creates. and thank you; it's okay, everyone has to start somewhere :)

      • More than ok - I didn't mean to sound negative. If the choice is between making a start and not making a start, you're doing everything right.

My highschool sweetheart had a weekend job from age 14 and I never understood it, now 20 years later she's a wonderfully self disciplined person and I often struggle with my work ethic. I'm not sure whether the work ethic is the cause or the effect of the high school job, but regardless it's a great sign of the kind of self control and focus you'll be able to show throughout your life. I should work on expressing my positive thoughts better…

Anyway I'm not trying to talk down to you, just trying to say good on you.

  • are the burgers really better at HJ?

    • depends on your own taste.

I hate the clickbait articles like that. There are probably hundreds if not thousands of the same articles floating around. They are usually from reddit though.

Generally they all say the same thing as well. People usually have the same experiences working at maccas. Just different interesting stories.

Obviously the author was having a slow news day.

'My store is 24/7 so at the end of my shifts, I could ask the manager for any leftover burgers that either haven't been picked up or are extra.'

I didn't see where OP said this, but in a 24/7 store this generally wouldn't happen. The burgers remain in the HLZ (heated landing zone) for 15-20 minutes. After this they are put in the waste bin and counted at the end of a managers shift. If they aren't counted then it messes with finance figures.
The stores I worked in were quite strict with the rules. Perhaps OP has a laid back franchisee.

I have heard of non 24/7 stores taking uneaten food home, but that stopped when the crew would purposely cook fresh food just for themselves for when they would finish.

      • I did mention this, probably somewhere in page one. Generally close to the end of my shift, there may be a few burgers left over on the HLZ. After 10-15 minutes, I'd request the managers to keep it there until I finish so that I could claim it - therefore being able to take it home. I believe it wouldn't mess with financial figures as the burger has already been transacted through anyways.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. That is interesting for sure!

  • Have you ever had a couple of babes turn up with their own straws? Had a couple of babes turn up to my store in Napier, NZ and they flaunted their own bright coloured male member straws while they ordered vanilla thick shakes.

Never. That'd be a little traumatising.

  • Is the food you sell to your customers healthy or unhealthy?

    • It's up to how you actually look at it. To be honest everything else in the similar industry is just as unhealthy as Maccas.

  • The Monopoly game…. Hate it and love it at the same time….

Have you ever seen anyone actually win a "big" prize? Or is it all rigged?

    • I swear it has to be rigged. I can't see people 'winning' big prizes as they aren't processed in store.

    • Fairly certain that it was rigged once in some country, probably the US a while ago. Supposedly someone who worked at Macca's there got hold of the big prize tickets and gave them to friends and family or something. I never see Macca's post on their FB page the winners or whatever… you'd think they'd do that sort of thing, but maybe I missed it.

  • Why is the frozen Coke machine always unavailable? Literally half the time I try and order a frozen coke, I have to get regular.

    • Look at the indicators above the machine. If one of the lights are on then it would mean the machine is unavailable. Our frozen machines are automatically defrosted every 20-30 minutes or so to ensure good consistency. From the start of defrosting to ready to serve it should take 3-5 minutes.

  • Good on you for sharing your experience with others, do you think school going kids can handle this job along with their school assignments etc? Say a year 10 kid can effectively manage both?

    • Thank you! Of course school kids are able to get along with their school assignments well. As a high school student myself I can say that Maccas gives you many opportunities to complete school work before coming into work.

Possibilities are that you can ask your rosters to be reduced during the busiest times, or set your availabilities to only weekends etc.

Just read your response to Markmathews.
    Well handled!
    Respect to you!

  • If you're leaning how come you are not cleaning?

  • Have most staff been working for Maccas since they were young? Do you see many new employees in their 30s, 40s or 50s?

Kind of have to disagree again nxllson . With especially Yr 12 results meaning the whole world , I think special tutoring , specialist schools and hard study devoted to achieving highest marks possible the go . If not realize your competitors for that are devoting every minute of their time to that kind of effort . Macca's work doesn't help .

At the end of the competition most of the top offers for further studies and hence better jobs are won by the above :)

    • It depends on the child doesn't it?

I'd rather hire somebody that had a part time job (and did sport and volunteering and had hobbies) and got 92 than one that got 99 and did nothing else.

If you just study you won't be resilient and flexible and your time management skills are probably lacking.

  • I live next door to Maccas (we share fence). Many people sitting outside my place eating burgers and just leave all types of rubbish on the footpath/driveway.
Do you have any suggestion how to deal with the issue?

  • I think you need to drop the "I've Been Working at Front Counter @ Maccas for Way Too Long". Back in the day I did 7 years there! Not 5 months.
