Ive had to replace the glass on one of the kid's iPads a couple of times now. Ive been using aftermarket screens and it appears they just arent as strong as the OEM screens. Its not yet known whether Apple used Gorilla glass but it does seem that they used aluminasilicate glass based on the fact that water beads on it:-

I dont really want to change it again unless its going to last. My understanding is that replacement screens prior to 2015 were usually OEM-equivalent (basically the same factories that make the Apple screens were churning out aftermarket screens during the night shift) but Apple clamped down on their suppliers and genuine spare parts have been hard to find since.
The only real screens floating around now are those salvaged from existing iPads, apparently:-

Ive seen a couple of screen places claim to be able to install OEM screens for an additional fee (Ive been quoted $130 for an OEM screen replacement) but is it really the case that those screens are genuine? Seems unlikely to me.
Not sure what Applecare is, but if you want to pay Apple, you can put your info in here https://getsupport.apple.com/?caller=psp&PRKEYS= and can see what the price is
