Im looking for a bmx bike for my son. It shouldnt be too expensive as is he is 12 years old and just got his nose into this sport and i am no to sure he will be as passionate about it as he is know. I also looked for used ones but most of them were to far away and shipping would have been to expensive. (I mostly checked https://www.bmx-forum.com/forums/bmx-for-sale-classifieds.17…)
I also looked on the usual sides but i dont really know what to look out for, as i dont even own a bicycle, not say a mountainbike. So any help in this direction would be highly appreciated!
Looking for a BMX for My Son
Comments
Your post mentions that you don't have a lot of knowledge of bikes. As your son is 12y.o., he will have very specific things that he thinks he needs.
I would encourage you to take him to a local BMX competition day or similar, and engage with competitors and organisers. They may be able to provide suggestions. You never know, you might even find a 2nd hand bike for sale there.Apart from that, you could take your son to a reputable bike shop and talk to the staff. Most are pretty helpful; seems to go with the industry.
Depending on your budget have a look at gumtree too - all of my kids have name brand quality BMX's that we bought barely used off gumtree. Much better to get a used name brand than a cheapie
So it will be purely for racing and he has a seperate bike for bush bashing?
Who here use to rock a Mongoose BMX bike? All chrome? Pegs?
don't forget the bear trap pedals yo!
I never will have permanent indents on my shin bones from when clowning around, ah the good old days when you could buy things that could do physical damage
Fish tailing downhill on grass.
Foot brakes weren't all that bad, until you snapped the chain.
Even among bmx there are different styles, you need to buy one suited to his riding style preference. Racing, cruising, park/trick etc.
My opinion is ask him what he wants and then find out if it fits your budget. Being a 12yo he will know what model he is after.
If he doesn't know what he wants then you can look at what his friends have and check for same or similar model. You will be a supermum for doing that.
Or you can start low budget like Kmart or BIGW bmx, show him and if he likes it then get it. These bikes require self assembly and it generally isn't great quality.
Although it is half or even more than half the price of a better brand bmx bike from a bike store.
I bought my kids bike from chainreaction, UK site but free delivery to Aus much better bikes for your $$$ they were so much cheaper I initially went there because I wanted a bike that didn't have that stupid back pedal brake.
They are pretty good on the service side and recommendations are pretty spot on. I ended up paying $180 for a bike that was better built weighed half of the kids bikes here better running gear couldn't fault it and probably close to half the price.
You provide all the measurements they ask for once you have picked and they set it up near as for you, attach pedals align handlebar and it's done
