There is a good sticky about EoP on whirlpool. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1512203

The key point is that 200Mb is basically impossible. Expect 20-130Mb at best depending on location and brand.

  • Wireless N routers tout 300mbps but equipment will generally report connections in the 130-150 Mbps range,
    same-same.

I think the real benefit of Ethernet over power is consistent data through put, without drop outs etc.

This instruction guide details how to get the best performance out of the device
    http://pro2.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/IPP200INSTRUCTION…

  • So these are the same speed as wireless N - they may be more consistent due to less drops.

So if I have a stable wireless N router it's a pointless purchase?
What if you are in Brunswick with the new NBN project coming to town?

    • This unit is intended for people who have laptops, game consoles, PVRs or Media Players without wireless support. This enables those users to easily connect to their existing network. there are 2 alternatives for users in this situation

1)Run new Ethernet cables throughout your house.
2)Purchase a new wireless router, umbilically connect it to your device and then set up wireless bridging.

The problem with option 1 is obvious.
The problem with option 2 is that your existing wireless router AND your new router must be compatible AND support wireless bridging. That is to say that just because you have 2 wireless routers that support bridge mode, chances are the bridge modes are incompatible unless they are the same make and model of router.

If you are in Brunswick with the new NBN project and find that your optical port is installed in your living room and the device you wish to connect is in a bedroom, you will still need to somehow connect your device to the network. This unit facilitates the process without any of the issues outlined above.

      • Also good in rented properties for home users or small business - you can simply unplug the network and take it with you when you move :)
And I concur with the fact that EoP is WAY more stable - filling the bathtub full of water used to kill my wireless signal in the room beyond the bathroom - no such problems with EoP !

my 30 metre ethernet cable >

…but my bro uses one similar for his foxtel

    • Yes you can buy 3 units. Extra units above twin pack added. Cost $50 each. Please adjust your unfair neg. C'mon you should be voting on if it's a good deal, $99 - free shipping and no credit card/paypal surcharges to boot!

If you are thinking purely along the computer networking idea you have missed the point. These devices have a whole lot more applications than just computer networking.

Ferretallica - you often ignore the guidelines on negative voting. In this case its an opinion about a product, which in your case maybe valid, but its not the case for everyone. Make your point but voting negative is in essence censorship of this product, it hides the deal -and ironically your comments from others who visit here.

You are new here - you havent contributed any deals yourself, which isnt necessary, but at the same time, we have guidelines that we play under. If you dont like the guidelines dont change them by ignoring or going against them, go to the forums discuss etc

If you persist in ignoring the guidelines you will not just lose the vote you will lose access to the site - slowly at first… You are on notice so read and understand them here

  • Tried a pair of these in my old place that was 30 years old, be warned that it may not actually work if your internal power is crappy :[

Does your TV spark and crackle when the washing machine is on?

  • +2

Can someone correct me if i'm wrong, these only work if the two power points are on the same circuit breaker.

These things are really handy for the right application. My pioneer amp has internet radio only has an ethernet connection + my old school xbox with XBMC for streaming movies. Sometimes it's not feasible to have 30metres of cabling running through your house.

    • +1

Ethernet over Power doesn't have to use same circuit, just the same phase. It would be better if they are on the same circuit though. Domestic houses have single phase power with each of the phases being shared between all the houses on the street.

      • +1

so technically i guess there is no reason why you cant share with the neighbours that are on the same phase?
Given that the RF power is strong enough.
that said it would be interesting to see what interference these devices can cause to close proximity short wave, ham radio receivers, even TV's etc.

        • +1

In general; LESS of an effect than WiFi, Bluetooth, and Mobile Phones :)

And yes it IS possible to share with the neighbours in some cases…
          (speaking from experience)

  • +1

Suggested max range is 200m. Having said that, most people wouldn't want to share their power tools, lawnmowers, Wife (pun) let alone their internet. That is unless you live in a commune!

Common usage for houses with black spot wifi connections such as house design, wave interference, multilevel houses or semi detached buildings such as outhouse, garage office etc. Latency issues for gamers or the BIG ONE
any other electronic device with ethernet that won't accept wifi.

Members how about the price? Any better offers etc. Please vote

    • Less than 10% cheaper than the next cheapest mob. meh.

  • A lot of these devices I've heard about interfere in various rf bands like FM broadcast etc. Do these suffer the same problem?

  • +1

I use Netcomm 200Mb/s ethernet over power adapters; I'm in a 30 year old unit complex; Big thick concrete walls.

    I get sustained 50 to 60 megabits/second using EoP for large transfers;

I used to leverage client bridge Wireless Access Point - WRT54g connecting to an Asus RT N16 both running dd-wrt (WPA2 AES protection). Transfers would start nice and fast - but then rate would drop from 54Mb/s down to eventually 2Mb/s.

    For people whom are currently leverage wireless client bridge to join LAN segments, I thoroughly recommend trying out EoP;

I have not tried Wireless N bridge; but I suspect unless you have nice line of sight and no interference, the sustained rates will still be inferior to EoP.

  • Output levels of EOP devices are minimal (might add gov't approved). To my knowledge they won't cause the interference you are referring to.

  • We've also added the option of EZdock Dual SATA HDD docking station for $24 with purchase
of the Ipp200 kit. Great for PVR's media players where you want to hot swap HDD's 2.5"/3.5"
    Specs here http://junglejumble.com.au/misc-clearance/ezdock-screwless-d…

  • Do these work with power boards?

    • In many cases, "YES"…
Unless the power board is of the type that does a really good job of filtering "noise" then it's a "NO"…
But you will probably get better speeds if you use a cheap double adapter and put the EoP on one side and the power board on the other.

    Belkin… ftw
    http://www.belkin.com/au/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id…
mine given me no prob and easy to use/setup. rrp is $149 though… think I paid $65 from ebay.

  • Thanks for the wrap. Should serve OZB SEO well.
You paid $65 for 1? Here's the current Ebay link with pricing.
    http://shop.ebay.com.au/i.html?_nkw=belkin+Powerline+200&_sa…

    • just checked, $62 :} new in box…. was lucky!
If I read it correct, free shipping? If so, would definitely put that in title!

      • All offers should include shipping on OzB. That's the way I learnt it anyways :)
When the student is ready, the master appears with capsicum spray & tasers ~ Buddhist Proverb

Well $62 is out the ball park. You obviously have long arms and short feet

  • so it doesn't have to be on the same circuit? (this still boggles me… ) would the power consumption be more than a typical wireless? also if I have an in-line UPS, i reckon i have to plug that outside of the UPS right? what about standby/idle power consumption?

    • Good questions. Would be answers but not forthcoming at 2am…will report back tomorrow

  • +1

One thing that could be of benefit of this over some other brand EOPs is that some of them are huge and may not fit well if you have powerpoints / powerboards that are not widely spaced. I have netcomm ones and I have to strategically position the unit.

    • That's a really good point! This unit has a figure 8 lead so no need to tie up a power board

  • this is $103 delivered, same product but different brand (TP-Link): http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/44264
So the price on this deal is ok I guess, but not quite good enough for me to +ve it, as I have at least heard of TP-Link, unlike this brand which is an unknown, quality wise (and in fact I own both a modem/router and a wireless N router made by TP-Link, which I am happy with).

Try $115 delivered + no paypal + Only Visa, MasterCard, 2% Surcharge applies ($117.30)

$99.95 with free delivery Australia wide. Paypal, Visa, Mastercard & AMEX accepted and no hidden surcharges

    • well the headline I read said "$89 + $14 Shipping", which is $103, unless my brain is broken. I didn't check out the actual link, but I have now, and I see their sale is over. Surcharges suck though, thanks for letting me know i-Tech do that.
