Back Patio Area Drainage Ideas

Hi guys

Havent had any this level of rain in ages (brisbane southside). Our back patio area needs some drainage options. It drained away over night but it seriously pooled pretty badly during the storm.

Worth diy-ing?

It appears they built the concrete area lower than the surrounding area? (or built surrounding higher than concrete).

You might try removing the border bricks and reshaping the area over near the water tank.

In weather like this anything is going to get pooling water. The main thing is that it doesn't drain into your house.

Yeah, I'm not seeing a problem here.
if you had water lapping at the back door I'd be concerned otherwise, what more do you expect in that kind of weather?

      • It drained away over night

        Problem already solved.

Draining away overnight is not too bad but if you have a few days of rain, you may see water close or at your doorway.

Correct me if I'm wrong but your patio roof doesn't have a gutter or the gutters are overflowing. It is hard to tell wether you have sufficient overhang as well.

Second, remove the brick and lay some drains at the edge of the concrete and cover with a grate. It won't spoil the look but your drainage will be excellent by then.

If you want to DIY, I'm not sure about your storm water rules but you can build it to drain into drainage pit before going into the storm water. May not be legal to drain into storm water pipe so check that part before you connect.

If it is not fair game, dig up some lawn and place some aygee piping and put lawn back. The water will now drain into the lawn. Only ideal on some types of soil and if your lawn has adequate drainage. May swamp if not suitable.

  • Thanks guys ill look into it.

And i dont believe its enough overhang and actually i suspect a blocked drain pipe too.

Our block is quite hard compacted dirt. So prob would be a problem….

  • It is always worth diy for stuff like this. If you have no idea, maybe get a plumber for a quote to fit/fix drainage, but tell them you’ll do all the digging and they just need to hook it up.
