So I have a very old desktop computer at home that is just about to die (keeps giving me blue screen of death and freezing when using it), I knew this day was coming so I would like to replace it with a laptop. To be honest I would not be using it for much except for backups of our family's iPhones and iPads .and photos. Most other things I do on my work computer.
Budget is under $500, would Something like is be suitable ? I am just just sure what sort of space I would need.

It makes no sense to buy a computer to make backups for your Apple devices. Just use an iCloud Family Sharing plan and simplify and automate the whole process.
This should have been merged with your other post about iCloud as it's the same issue.
