  • Appears that PLAY5 doesn't work at Officeworks eBay anymore.

    • You're right mate. I just tested it. I didnt check it when I made the post, just went by TA's post and assumed it was working for Officeworks.

Maybe best to change the link to just Bing Lee Ebay where the code works.

and the Ebay plus code works for Bing Lee Ebay anyway

Much better buy then the Google home, clocks got 3 brightness settings which you can't have automatically dim at a certain time of day but the middle setting isn't to dim during the day or to bright at night.

Bass is very absent but treble and highs are more pronounced. Good for radio and that.

Volume control via the gimmicky hovering sensor is a pain to figure out, easier to use voice to set volume.

Definitely set up the night mode to about 30% for the speaker as it's very loud at night if it's over 50%.

Other then those little nit picks it's a very nice and louder 360° speaker over the Google home and clock looks good.

    • Does the microphone pick up your voice brilliantly like the actual Google products do? Like you can say "hey google turn the volume down" in a normal voice far across the room and it responds? What matters most with these is that you're not fighting to be heard.

it works fine from my testing after purchasing yesterday - of course it suffers a bit once volume is up loud…

      • +1

@Morven Evanssm2jp is right, if the music is around 70% it'll pick up what I would consider speaking above average normal conversation, tested at around 4m away from speaker. I'd say the Google home is a fraction better at hearing me but it's probably from the fact it's not even half as loud so there's that to take into account. I've got 3 of these at home and I sold my 2 Google homes and mini so I definitely rate them good.

HEY GOOGLE! YOU CAN USE MY OFFICE AND THEN AFTERWARDS MAYBE WE CAN GO TO LUNCH.

  • Trying to find out if you can pair multiples of these for stereo like the homepods, but there’s not much info/reviews on this.
    Would anyone know? :)

    • +2

Not sure about stereo as in left and right separate channels to separate devices.

But if you are just looking to play the same song at the same time on multiple of these, you can setup a 'speaker group' through the Google Home app.

      • That’s super helpful thanks so much!

Can't do left / right (as not supported via google home software - yet??? Apparently only google home max can do that…)

  • How does this compare to the Amazon spot?

  • -1

Price dropping everywhere.. if you want white - its $122 directly from Sony.

  • Will it pop up on amazon?

  • +2

$118 Now @ Harvey Norman so can price beat at OW again to get it for $112.10 :)

    • Just tried. OW not matching because it says clearance :(

anyone buying from sony online store feel free to use my unused $10 voucher NPSAU10-6H7D-73TV-STXW-MLMP6 first in first serve! expiry is 31st March 2019. afaik it's free delivery from sony store if you register

EDIT: voucher has now been used.

  • Why is the price drop everywhere suddenly..Is product worth buying..? Any advise from anyone..?

    • I'm always suspicious of massive price drops from premium brands. I'm interested to hear feedback too.

      • probably a new version.. or may be sonos coming up with a Google AI

        • Sonos have Google Assistant coming to their speakers in "Early 2019" — it's in beta currently.

      • +1

Reviews haven't been favourable. Poor sound quality compared to the competition.

  • Lots of criticism of the sound quality in the JB thread on the same product, but is there an alternative with Google Assistant and better sound quality that is remotely similar in price? If not, this seems like a reasonable deal.

    • +1

Try JBL Link 10 for $147 from office works and harvey norman?

      • +1

Agree with this. Sound is pretty rounded for a relatively small speaker, and I've found myself using the fact it has a good battery as an excellent portable space filler during a party.
I like the sound enough I carry it around the house with me doing chores and being waterproof is nice too if you want to sing in the shower.
Downside is longer boot up time from off, and very rarely it sometimes just isn't responding to commands. Rarely though.

    • As far as I can tell, the alternatives with well-reviewed sound quality are more than twice the price.

If you want to listen to music, I'd save up and buy something else, like the Sonos or Onkyo.
If you just want to ask questions of Google, control your lights, set reminders, etc, then the Sony would be fine.

      • Or even the lowly google home mini

  • does this Google Assistant have the same capabilities as the Google Home ?

basically, it's there sitting & listening to your conversation until the trigger word
and then it becomes a Google search ?

(plus it has capabilities to turn on lights, Chromecast with TV, etc.? i.e. you got to connect via Wifi/CAT5 cable? )

    • Correct — it should do almost everything that Google Home does, apart from phone calls.

      • Google home can do phone calls in Australia ?

  • I’m deciding out of this or the Google Home Hub as i want to get smart lights but i’m not sure which one to get. Does anyone have one of these or a Google Home Hub and can share what it’s like?

    • The latest Google Home app allows you to set lots of automation/schedule with your Smart Connected devices.

      https://www.theverge.com/2018/7/27/17621266/google-home-sche…

Unless you need a dedicated screen, I would buy the Sony Speaker.

      • If i buy this sony speaker will i be able to connect my iPhone to it regarding the smart lights or do i need an android phone to connect it to the sony speaker? Sorry for the questions i just don’t want to buy it if i can’t connect my iPhone to it and can’t operate the smart lights.

  • Does any of you have the receipt for $113.05 from Bing Lee?

  • Black is out of stock now.

  • my experience on these. the support from Sony is lacking. up until a month ago the last firmware update was in Nov 2017.
even the latest update did not patch cast firmware to latest. it is currently at 1.32.146281 where regular Ghome is at 1.37.146679.

  • Just a note for those that want to use the broadcast feature will not work with third party google speakers. I discovered this the hard way.

  • Is the sound anywhere near the sound of google max ?
