How Much Data Do You Use a Month?

I recently changed to a Telstra home broadband 200GB/month plan (NBN still a long way off in my area). In the 2 months I have had it, I have had to apply a data top-up a week out from the end of the month both times. My only data usage is some online gaming (<10 hours/week) and Netflix (~3-4 hours/day). I have disabled all the automatic updates on the PCs in my house and have also disabled wireless on the router.

Just wondering if this usage is typical and how much data do other people use on a monthly basis for similar types of internet usage.

I average between 500GB and 1TB. I used to regularly hit 2TB on an ADSL connection though which I was kinda proud of.

Not sure your TV or Netflix type but 4k Netflix streams at something like 4-5gb per hour. We found that out very quickly going from just over 100gb a month to 400+

  • Generally around 500GB. Two people in the house and I'm the primary source of the usage.
Depends on the movies/games which come out in the month to how much I download.

From my usage statistics, a normal day of browsing, youtube and gaming ends up being about 5GB a day.

I live by myself and use about 200gb/month. Mainly use it to download Xbox games, watch YoupornTube, Netflix and to check ozbargain.
I have yet to come close to reaching the limit of my unlimited plan.

  • Averaging around 500GB per month which is for a household of 4.
Consumption is made up of Netflix, Youtube video, Music and working online.

However my stats for last 2 months are:
    Feb - 2.6TB
    March - 700GB

  • i need 50gb monthly and i don't use mobile data / don't need fast speed

but i can't find cheap 50gb NBN or mobile data

currently paying $60 p/m unlimited which is overkill

looking for cheaper options but has to be at least $25 savings, else not worth moving from $60 p/m unlimited 100/40 FTTB if only saving $10 difference

    • I'd consider changing just to mobile internet all together.
But depends on 4g connection in your area.

        Can't find 50gb mobile internet at $35

        • Probably not but I was more or less talking about combining you mobile phone in the overall picture.
Depending which telco. I'll us Optus as an example but YMMV depending on the entire set up.
          $50 for 80gb data pool.
          $25 for additional Sim.
          $75 for ~80gb shared.

But I'm guessing you could be on prepaid as you don't need mobile data.

500GB+ normally. Having 250 down FTTP certainly helps.

      250 down wow.

      cries in adsl

      • Just wait until you use 1Gbps connections.

        • In Paris, they have just upgraded to 10Gbps connections for a fraction of the price we pay.

          • @dogboy: And here's little old me on a 5mbps connection 🙃

  • Have been unmetered for years so no idea! Theres usually something streaming whenever we're home though (Netflix, sports, YouTube) so likely lots.

  • At least 1.5tb a month my first three months this year have been like
    1 - 3.8TB
    2 - 2TB
    3 - 1.4TB (months not over yet.)
