Swapping AUD for MYR in Penang?

Mrs B and I are going to Malaysia next week.
Usually we swap AUD for MYR at the exchanges at Sentral station in KL, they have excellent rates.
But this time we are flying into Penang, so no chance to use our usual and trusted businesses.
Any suggestion on how best to trade Aussies for Ringgits?
And/or, if there is anyone in Melbourne who would swap their MYRs for my AUDs, I could do that too.
Thanks in advance.

I use Munawarah Exchange currency exchange located outside Prangin Mall near Komtar - usually the best rates I can find and very close to the official exchange rate.

I second this, used them a few times on my last trip mid 2018. Decent rates.

  • I was going to suggest Citibank Plus and withdraw from their ATM in Penang but looks like they're not widely available in the island. But perhaps the airport would have an ATM for you to withdraw when you arrive?

I do have some MYR I wouldn't mind swapping for AUD, will send you a PM on this.

    • I tried to convince a manager to withdraw with Citibank Plus during a business trip to Penang. Then they brought me to a small kiosk at the bottom of some crappy mall in Georgetown that offered better rates than Google.

I later found the same in a few places in KL. Cash is often the way to go in Malaysia

      • Haha all the malls are crappy in Georgetown.

Having said that I love that town; people, architecture, art, food, sights, food etc.

i normally will use Money Exchange stalls at Ground floor of Prangin Mall near KOMTAR, walk around and ask for price. I find that they are offering best rates, avoid Gurney Mall and airport (duh… ) :)

  • AUD->MYR->USD is cheaper in KL than buying USD in Australia.

I have used my Citibank card to withdraw cash at ATMs in Penang with no fee. I also concur the money changers in Prangin are reasonable.

Having said that, the hotels dont tend to rip you off too much either. Not as good as in Prangin, but good enough to not worry about it.

My main source is always my Citibank card at ATMs though.

  • I used Citibank ATM which has very good exchange rates
