Hi op.. I'm after the hakushu 12 only.. could you work something out
How does this go with Pepsi Max

Not so good. Ginger ale is the way to go.
Real original
😂😂😂 Shiny1 aka the fun police
You had me at Hibiki 12. Have an upvote.
Excellent price.
Hibiki 12 alone is $700.
oh wow.. crazy prices… I stocked up heaps on the 17 before they ran out
12 were like 80 aud before in japan
I bought my Hibiki 17 and 12 in 2013 when they were $85 and $45 respectively. Now I can't bring myself to open them.
Just sell them
Where does one buy or sell Hibiki 12 at $700?
I have 2 each of the 12 and 17 I'd want to offload
Or you know, someone could actually like these Whiskies?
Going to need to be more than "like" for $1250.
Well it's a supply and demand issue isn't it, as is the case with all aged Japanese bottles.
For you. Other people have different priorities and expendable income.
They have decent collectible value, if nothing else. Anything Japanese with an age statement has been in short supply for the past few years.
Most of the bottles are sold out at retail stores.
Not the most eloquent way to put it, but Japanese whisky is pretty rough. Even if it was $150/bottle I would find something better to drink.
Heck, I don't think I'd touch it at $80.
and what are better? whisky of course
"better" is often subjective I believe. I personally like a big bold oaky bourbon, but some call it sweet and unrefined. Some like a blended scotch for its balanced nature. I find it generic =p
I find the best way is to go into a good down to earth whiskey bar that doesn't charge the world, and try some out.
I didn't offer options as people like to try to nitpick the crap out of them in desperate attempts to discredit the original opinion.
However I'll be generous as it seems like you have a genuine enquiry.
Depends what price range we're looking at.
In the range of the OP pricing, the Tasmanian heartwoods I've had have all been incredible. Old ones are hard to get a hold of, occasionally coming out as box sets or for charity fundraisers, but Mr H has new releases relatively regularly.
I could list a number of bottles from SMWS but that would be pointless as you can't buy them anymore.
At the $100-$175 range I'd have to say Uigeadail is a class act as well as on the cheaper end but not for everyone as very peaty. The surprise for me was the young Portonova on the pricier end but be warned you must let it oxidise properly else the first tasting will be horrifically medicinal.
At the $80 I mentioned you're stuck with a blend. Jura Superstition is the only good one, but even with noticeable blend changes over the years they keep nailing it.
PS: Don't touch other Juras or Amruts - not good.
if you think japanese whisky is rough, youve obviously have nfi
japanese whiskeys characteristics and style are far more mellow and delicate than scotch
Yeah whiskey in general has gone stupid over the last 10 years. In my first couple of trips to Japan I could easily pick up a yamazaki 18 for $200. On my trip to the States in early 2010s, I walked into any old bottle shop and picked up a btac for $100.
These bottles aren't worth the crazy prices they go for, it's simply that the demand is there and people pay it.
exactly. japanese whisky in general is pretty damn good.
here in Aus if you buy cheap whisky then it is guaranteed to be crap. even not-so-cheap whisky brands are crap.
in Japan, some cheap whisky is awesome, some is OK, I have never had a Oz-level-of-cheap-crap-whisky japanese whisky,
plus what australians are charged for whisky is ridiculous.
example -
I bought a bottle of fuji sanroku for ¥800 for 700ml at an Aeon supermarket -the colesworths of Japan
at Nicks - $90
at Dans - $100
$10 in Japan Vs $90 in Australia
just saying
The import duty is about $85/lt of pure alcohol, so for a typical bottle that's about $30 of straight tax. Add shipping and profits…yeah $90 is high, but not as egregious as it first looks.
I don't mind some cheap whisky. I enjoy devils cut bourbon for a cheap drink =)
But I do heavily agree that expensive does not equal good in all cases!
this is ozBargain, not ozRichpeopleBargain
Yet the most voted deal this year was a 150K Tesla.
A bargain does not have to be cheap.
$1,250? Wut?
It's a fairly good deal consider the import price plus 29%WET and duty if these are authentic. Quite expensive whisky at JPY30k each bottle in Japan. Got to say even larger retailer can't guarantee you will buy authentic liquor.
Yeah, but $1,250? Wut?
it would be cheaper to fly to japan and buy them there.
no it wouldn't
<shrugs and flies to Japan to buy whisky anyway>
No, Suntory has pretty much aligned their pricing globally now (following LVMH's lead with premiumizing their booze lines). Also good luck finding anything thats not NAS in stores!
I have about 4cm left of Hibiki 17. Throw me some offers.
Hibiki 12 was discontinued in 2015 so seems a gamble to spend that amount on 4 year old bottles with no guarantee that they have been stored safely.
Japanese whisky is good but completely overrated.
For $700 I could show you a dozen Scotches that would absolutely blow any 12yo Japanese whisky out the water
Any recommendations? I personally love the subtlety and balance of Japanese whisky (e.g. Hibiki, Chita, Nikka Coffey variants).
blow any 12yo Japanese whisky out the water
No blowing 12yo japanese … this is a family friendly website.
Bugger already sold out!
I'll take 2.
