Am i just behind the times but since when did microsoft sell huawei products?

    • +13

and priced like a mac too

      • +15

oh yeh…there is no way I will ever pay premium for Huawei product.

        • +8

Exactly. If I'm buying Huawei I want it cheap.

No idea what fools are downvoting you. Have a +

          • +3

@justtoreply: I am uncertain why huawei's price goes to that high, yes their products aren't bad but considering the consistent pressure from Western governments, they should lower the price to win the market.

            • +11

@hfwangau: The world doesn't revolve around Western markets. They already sell more phones than Apple.

          • +7

@justtoreply: Lol the ignorance on your comments is dazzling.

This Huawei is a beast. But you only know apple, right?

        • +8

So you would waste money buying an inferior device from another brand in the case that the Huawei was better?

          • +4

            @Diji1: its about reputation,
apple (like them or hate them) have good quality products and service, hence the premium pricing

Huawei are still new, made in china, and to most are still seen as inferior chinese brand

I certainly wouldnt be paying premium prices for a Huawei product

            • +17

@Samsungnote10: So you would buy an inferior product.

The brainwashing is so strong lols.

              • -3

@Diji1: If I wanted a laptop that looked like a Mac, I'd buy a Mac. And with the added bonus of it running OSX. Amazing how you sheep always bash Apple, then RUN out and buy products that are clones of Apple products you all claim to hate. The F-ing lols are strong at you neckbeards. I bet you even rock those $10 knockoff AirPod headset, don't you?

            • +18

              @Samsungnote10:

              1. Huawei is not new.

              2. "To most" aka those who doesn't really pay attention to what's happening in China and the market.

              • -6

@sauce2k: and branding is part of reputation, you could be good at what you do, but if you dont have the reputation, people wont buy at premium pricing

                • +9

@Samsungnote10: What reputation are you referring to? I assume it's the denial of 5G by the gov (ridiculous) and what happened in the States (Huawei is suing America for the ban).

Otherwise the qualities of the products they make are quite decent.

                    • +13

@Samsungnote10: "the general reputation that chinese goods are inferior"

Lol dead ..It just shows how much of an ignorant you are…I guess the discussion stops right here..

                      • +6

@sauce2k: Why are you even bothering bro?

Just let them buy apple. They have 'reputation'

                        • @nikoris: Yeh I thought he had some legitimate reasons.. As soon as he stated all Chinese goods are inferior, I know he doesn't really understand the word reputation haha..

            • +14

              @Samsungnote10: Lol wut?
I don't wanna buy Huawei because it should be cheap because it's made in China?!?
Aren't ALL the portable devices we have are made in China? Apple's products are made in china!
China's been making premium products for over a decade now… they have the man power.. the knowledge.. the experience!

Premium items made in Australia? Why do you think Holden's this close to shutting down?

                • @Samsungnote10: The problem is cheap things made in China are generally low quality. But not everything from there is cheap, if you are happy to pay a fair price, you will get good quality items.

For example I saw a new pneumatic cattle crush the other day. This thing was amazing! Heavy steel, quality hinges, quiet latches and great controls. I assumed it was made in Aus or the US and was staggered to find out it was from China. The farmer who bought it said $15k Chinese crushes are rubbish but $25k Chinese crushes are excellent but everyone tries to save a few dollars and ends up with 'cheap' Chinese stuff.

            • @Samsungnote10: You're confusing reputation with perception. Apple has a long list of problems with their products. I certainly wouldn't pay premium prices for an Apple product.

              • @djlee: in my books, perception is reputation

you may not pay premium prices for apple products, nor would I, but the vast majority of population do

            • @Samsungnote10: Every time I see somebody write Apple + Quality + Service I feel compelled to write a brief of my experience w/ them.
              - Bought new iPad Pro 10.5" to test iOS sw, didn't use it for a while.

In brief: I purchased a defective Apple iPad, I had to return it to them but they kept my box and accessories, and returned the same defective iPad. Further: New iPad w/ less than 10hrs total on time (less than 2 hrs use), screen goes black after less than 10 minutes use. Contacted Apple support, after many hours they asked me send in for repair. So I sent the iPad in as new, with the plastic covering the iPad, and everything identical to brand new as I was expecting a new iPad, and I included a letter describing the issue w/ Youtube video demonstrations of the issue. 10 days later I received the iPad back in a plain cardboard box without any the accessories I sent them, and a note saying it meets Apple specifications. Turn it on, 5 minutes later screen goes dark, exactly like before. So no iPad box, no charger, no cable, no documentation, just a plain post box and STILL defective iPad. So I call up Apple Support, explain the issue again, they set up a Genius Bar appointment. My wife went and after a long discussion she was given an older refurbished iPad, but still no box or accessories. I don't use the iPad often, so it stays in the box until I need it… once every couple months. It was bad enough to waste so much of my time, not repair the device, but to then take my box & accessories, give me an older refurbished unit and act like it's my tough luck is TOTALLY Apple Service every idiot raves about.

Apple if you ever read this: Case Number: 100739581441, 100728832001 Repair ID: D406130375.

So I doubt Huawei could be as bad as Apple (Foxconn), nobody else apart from Bose and BMW have been w/ me.

Xiaomi for example, everything has been better than Apple (Foxconn) quality.

              • @raybies:

im sure there are going to be different experiences from horrible to excellent ,

I actually dont like apple products (lets keep that to separate debate) but I have had just one apple device in my life and it was an ipad, I had my gripes about it, due to its specs/features but I only realised that once I had purchased it (so thats my fault)
my ipad would not work with my phone as a hotspot, I tried 3 other different branded phones to hotspot with, and they all worked, my phone would sync but no data, so I assumed it was a faulty device,
I took the device to apple, and the guy said hed never seen it before and was a bit skeptical it was a faulty apple product. He immediately replaced it with a new one even though the ipad was just outside warranty, I took the ipad home and tried it again, and exactly the same problem.
Googling revelaed that my particular brand of phone did not sync at all with that particular model ipad, regardless I was impressed with apples service,

Had I had a different brand, they probably would have tested it for 1 week and told me, nothing is wrong with it, or they couldnt replicate the problem, and possibly offer me a replacement refurb for a fee

                just my experience

                • @Samsungnote10: I would be impressed w/ that kind of service too, but I took my issue all the way, then to Fair Trading.

                  • @raybies: and so you should!

I made an ombudsman complaint with my sony xperia a few years ago,

4-6 repairs in 6 months, with the final 2 repairs, the phone came back unopened , and a report that said "fixed, tested, nothing wrong"

I had to go throguh FB as well to initially get a reply,
I was more angry at the arrogant customer service manager who I dealt with from the start
even blamed my sim card for the faults on the phone,

they eventually sent me a new refurb phone, and that worked perfectly for years,

I have not bought a sony since then

          • +1

            @Diji1:

you would waste money buying an inferior device from another brand

If you are implying Apple's MacBook than no, I wouldn't waste money on that.
If you are implying other computer manufacturers than yes I would, because they wouldn't be inferior (or they would be cheaper).

Speaking mobile phones, Apple and Samsung have got a strong grip on the upper market. Huawei should be making more competitively priced products for the mid-tier and grab that (which at the moment is largely unclaimed).

For me, I am Anti-Apple. Their products aren't worth it. I don't want/need a clone of their products either.

            • @pennypincher98: And this brainwashed person would also buy an inferior product after they've finished explaining imaginary scenarios that negates the scenario they're replying to.

I'm not implying anything, I'm saying in the case that it was better.

              • +2

@Diji1: Imaginary scenarios? Are you serious?

Take a look around you. Huawei's offering is not the cheapest for the specs + features. It's very Apple also, which is a strong selling point for many. For me, it's a deterrent.

You cannot simply deny that Huawei draws inspiration from Apple. Too much so.

Btw "in the case it was better" is an imaginary scenario. LOL.

                • +8

@pennypincher98: "Made in Japan" used to mean junk, now it is a sign of quality. South Korea took over the bottom after Japan vacated it but it has evolved to produce average-good stuff (cheap and nasty Daewoos/Hyundai vs modern decent Hyundai/Kia). You have to evolve upwards and get better, there isn't much of future in competing to produce rubbish.

Huawei might have been shameless thieves and copyists but they are now trying to upbrand* themselves, and selling expensive gear helps them create that impression. There isn't a great future for Huawei just making crap phones and computers, there are plenty of Chinese makers in that cheap goods market. Upbranding themselves gives them an edge in profit on more expensive gear but even at the low end of the market it gets customers thinking a "cheap phone coming from a premium company must be better". Samsung did similar up their prices/tech specs to position themselves as Apple's equals.

                  • I think I just made up a word.
                  • @CookieJacker31:

There isn't a great future for Huawei just making crap phones and computers, there are plenty of Chinese makers in that cheap goods market.

Yes obviously, but I'm talking mid-tier phones and pricing. Around $500-$800 is a sweet spot I think they should aim for.
They don't have enough brand power to make $1500 phones and take on Apple and Samsung. Besides, not as many people as you think actually want/purchase a flagship phone.

              • @Diji1: I would have to also factor one thing when buying a product and that’s after sales service. With brands like Huawei if you have an issue or fault the wait times to get it fixed or looked at would mean time away from your laptop which can affect productivity. With Apple due to having many store locations, getting repairs or technical assistance is almost same day. Spec by spec comparison yes the Apple products lose. After care support Apple is in a league of their own.*

                • only if you live near an Apple store
      • Why not? It's a better product actually

    • +1

Yeah I was surprised too when I saw the Asus at the flagship store on Pitt St. They only have a small area where they sell this. This was also the case for the Asus ultrabooks that I was after.

    Dell XPS15 FHD, 16gb RAM, I7-8700H or this ???

Main uses: Photo editing, light gaming (CS:GO)

    • +4

Would love to hear other views on this, also going back back and forth myself. The Huawei is slightly pulling ahead as it looks awesome especially in space grey, and I think the XPS 15 looks a bit weird with the keyboard size where you have gaps on either side of the keyboard. Probably would prefer the XPS 13 for this reason, so many decisions!!!

      • omg thought exactly the same thing about the gap on the keyboard for the XPS15!! It looks like weird dead space. The XPS 13 looks much better because it doesn't have that wasted space.

I don't think you can go wrong with XPS13 quite honestly, Dell has a better history of making good laptops, it's been tried and tested and cheaper.

        • +1

I've been using an XPS 15 for the past few months and I'm relieved I'm not the only one who was bothered by the enormous gaps xD
Put that space to good use - give us some speakers or add a column of handy function keys on each side.

I also find the keys to be obscenely small, especially for a notebook for this size. What kind of consumer is Dell targeting with this product? Toddlers and American presidents?
The tiny keys would be less egregious if they made room for a number pad and full-sized arrow keys, but OzBargainers can't have nice things…

Maybe Dell just slapped the XPS 13's keyboard on the XPS 15 and called it a day instead of designing and making a whole new keyboard so they could save on manufacturing costs or something.

          Sorry about the rant lol

          • @[Deactivated]: It definitely is a bit odd. My mate has one and I mentioned it and he just said, it's not bad for resting your hands on. I kind of understand but it still doesn't look good.

    • Same boat as you. I was all about the Matebook but it wasn't available at the price point I was after so I was going to get the XPS 15. But now that this is at the same price (albeit not as well spec'd), I'm in a similar dilemma

    • +7

The main differences between the two are 1. Screen dimensions, 2. Weight, and 3. Graphics card.

      1. I find the Matebook's screen to be a bit too small for gaming, but that's just personal preference. If you connect an external monitor when you game however, my point is moot. I do a bit of digital art and graphic design and the Matebook's 3:2 aspect ratio lets you see more; I find this advantage also applies to word processing and reading PDFs or eBooks. But there's also a minor drawback - when you're watching TV/movies (unless the TV show is very old), there will be big black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

      2. My XPS 15 weighs about 2.2kg; the Matebook is about a kilo less. If you plan on carrying your notebook around a lot for school/work/whatever, the Matebook wins in my eyes. I guess you CAN lug around the XPS, but doing so is far from pleasant (but I'm weak shit and I don't lift lol).

      3. With the configuration you've put down, the XPS 15 will come with a GTX 1050ti 4GB card, if I'm not mistaken. It's an entry-level card, but I've played stuff like The Witcher 3 on high settings and the XPS handled it surprisingly well. The Matebook's MX150 is not really a gaming card, but CS:GO is a rather old game at this point so I'm sure if you keep the graphics settings sensible, you'll be fine. It wouldn't hurt to prop it up the back with like a book or something to improve the airflow and avoid overheating. Both notebooks have Thunderbolt 3, so buying an eGPU is an option; I'm not saying it's the best option since pre-built eGPUs tend to be expensive, but it IS an option.

That's enough word vomit from me. If you have any other questions I'll try and help as much as I can.

      • Before I started looking at laptops, I was thinking I wanted something with a great screen (2k-4k), portable and with enough power for a bit of casual/basic photoshop and playing old games (I have a PS4 for modern games). That led me to the XPS13 because of the price of the Matebook.

So on your third point, I was actually about to buy the XPS15 today even though it's not super portable, still a FHD screen but had enough power for play modern games with OK performance. So not exactly what I was looking for but it was just so cheap (same price as the i5 matebook) that I was just gonna get it. This changes things now.

I'm going after the i5 base version which is basically the same specs as the XPS13 I was gonna originally get.

Good thing is there is a 30 day return policy so I'll give it a run and if it doesn't suit my needs I'll just return it and wait for EOFY sales and get the DELL

So question, how is the battery life on the Matebook (assuming both versions are roughly the same)? And performance issues you found with the U version of the current gen processors?

        • The battery life is so-so; expect about 7 hours with mixed usage. That's the i7 though, I don't have experience with the i5.
Something to note about the i5 is that it only comes with integrated graphics; combined, they will be a lot less taxing on the battery. I can't give you a solid figure, but I expect you to get an extra hour or two with the i5/UHD 620.

          • @[Deactivated]: Thanks for the feedback. I ordered one after playing around with it at the Microsoft store. Luckily they also had both Dell's there as well. After seeing it in real life, it pretty much sold itself right away. It just had everything I was looking for and with a 30 day change of mind policy, it was a no brainer

    • I've been using the Matebook X Pro (i7) for the last 6 months or so. I haven't checked the XPS 15 specifically but I did find the display to have a much better response time than the XPS 13s that I compared it to. I found the XPS 13 to be unusable for movies/games for this reason.

After using the Matebook X Pro for a while I would say the two main drawbacks are the thermals (you'll want to undervolt) and the screen can also seem a bit too glossy for my liking at times.

      • Xps 13 you need to undervolt on i7 too.
And put more thermal pads ideally.

Throttles like crazy otherwise and fans are super loud

    bloody hell

    • If it's any consolation that's a pretty sweet laptop as well. How are you finding it?

      • its very very light, gonna be great when I carry it with my camera gears.

the Batt life is about 3-4 hours, however USB-C charging is fantastic, meaning between my phone and laptop I only need to carry one charger.

Still I was orginally planning to get the Huawei i7 version

  • +1

What a name… Matebook. Is it the same name in other parts of the world or just for us ‘Ockers’? Or they just as usual copying Apple?

    • +10

Comradebook was the name during UAT testing.

    • +3

I think they're just continuing their naming scheme from their Mate phones. Their first Mate phone was released in 2013.

The only reason I would buy a Mac is if I got board of Windows and wanted to try something a little different. Though for me, I would not buy a Macbook or a Matebook but the Fujitsu LIFEBOOK WU2/C3. Thing is they don't sell them in Australia.

  • +4

Got one last time it was on pre-order- would definitely recommend!

    • How does it go with heating and/or fan noise? Have an XPS that heats up like crazy and makes it unusable.. that's with basic web browsing/YouTube use.

      • I've had the laptop about 5 months now and so far no heating issues though the fan becomes audible when I'm running multiple heavy programs/screens.

    • Did you have any issues with it, like trackpad rattle?

      • Definitely a mild rattle present but nothing you notice on day to day use!

    • What were your main uses for the laptop and how has it faired for you so far?

      • +1

main use is using word and collaborating with thought police

      • +1

    About Huawei:

They're not new - they've been around for a long time, initially making shitty products, but recently have gotten quite good - check out the P20 Pro and the reviews it's gotten. Their smartphones since then have been very competitive in the Android scene, and this laptop's no different.

If you're worry about the "China's going to backdoor my computer" angle - yeah, they probably could if they wanted to as China can compel Huawei to cooperate in the interest of "national interests", but unless you're the ambassador to the UN or someone who works with information they'd be interested in - you're probably going to be fine.

    About the laptop:

It's good and has plenty of good reviews, but there're also others out there that're as good for the around the same price, like your Dell XPS range, and some Lenovos.

I was eyeing this for a long time before discovering that spec-wise, I was able to get a Lenovo Yoga that had similarly high specs, for a lot cheaper.

I got the Lenovo Yoga 920 for $1520 late last year, which had some pretty great specs:

    Intel Core i7-8550U CPU @ 1.80GHz, 4 Core(s)
    16GB RAM
    512GB NVMe Hard Drive
    13.9" UHD 4K Screen
    etc etc.

Great for running VMs if you're doing stuff with virtual machines, and also beefy enough to handle Photoshop with ease.

Don't panic about Huawei, and also don't freak out about how great a deal this is - the company makes good gear; probably isn't keen on going through the effort of compromising your machine; and the specs are good, but nothing to write home about given the price.

    • +3

Woah that is an insane deal for the Yoga 920 at those specs. Where'd you get it from?

      • I want to know too!
