Best Place to Get £GBP in Adelaide

Hi OzBargain Community,

It's been a while since I last posted in the forum, but I continue to read about bargains in Australia (and throughout the world). I currently live in the UK, and my parents are likely to come and visit in April. I'm already aware of companies (e.g. Citibank, 28Degrees) that offer overseas fee free transactions (excl. ATM withdrawals) and have shared this information with them. I am able to pay for purchases when they are here, but they want to be able to bring some cash with them for when they first arrive (approx. £500). I know that the exchange rate is rubbish at the moment (hopefully it increases post Brexit - if it happens), but I don't want them walking into Travelex or similar and just paying the first figure that they get quoted. Can anybody recommend any physical places in SA or are there online Foreign Currency Companies that offer better rates?

Thanks in advance

  • Could you convince them to make a withdrawal from an ATM at the airport on arrival? This would open up a few cost-effective (but tedious) options. For example, you open a spare Starling account, use Transferwise (or similar) to bring the AU$ to that account, then send them the physical card. Clunky, but for £500 it could be worth it.

…you'd need to do this twice though to circumvent the £300 daily ATM limit for Starling though. Urgh.

    • ATM limit for Starling

I wonder what PETA thinks about these ATMs that deal in Starling or did you mean Sterling?

  • Thanks for the suggestion, a bit clunky like you mentioned. I have a HSBC UK Bank Account, so don't really need to open another.

  • They might get a better rate swapping for AUD at home? I would get them to check the current rate at some physical shops at home and compare the current rate at some places near you (travelmoneyoz is one I use in vic often) to see which will offer them more.

    • Yeah, I've suggested to do a bit of shopping around, particularly down King William Street, as there are a number of big and small Currency Exchange Stores, which you can often get them to match quotes. Just thought there might be a company online that offer better than in store rates.

      • Oh right sorry I got it the wrong way around. I thought they were coming to uk from Aus!

I agree with the suggestions of getting an ing or Citibank to take.

  • ATM withdrawal on arrival from Australian fee free card like ING.
