Belong NBN Has a Terrible Service Even for a New Customer. Please Stay Away from Them

I have just moved houses and few weeks ago called Belong to get a connection. They assured me that I will get a connection activated wit ha Modem delivered on my move-in date.
Fast forward today, its been 4 working days since I moved in, and my modem is still sitting in their Warehouse!!!!
Its costing me a fortune to use internet through my phone service provider and I need an internet to work from home.
Its making me furious and not sure what are my options to get rid of this terrible company!!!
They have been reassuring me everyday since past 4 days that we are escalating your delivery process, but everyday different person says the same thing!!

I have made a huge mistake going with them.

  • Might be easier to get a cheap modem off gumtree or look at areas where people are throwing stuff away because they're moving out (I got a free modem that way), or a friend might have a spare one? At least until the one from Belong arrives/you finish dealing with this company.

    • Can I use ADSL modem for NBN connection?

Depends but from what I understand - you don't need a modem at all - the NBN box serves as the modem and you just need a compatible router to plug into that box. You can buy one off eBay with next day delivery for about $100 on the cheap end.

What kind of NBN technology do you have? Is it FTTP, FTTC / FTTN, HFC or fixed wireless?

FTTP doesn't actually require a modem, all you need is a router and that is connected to your NTD (network termination device). In a pinch, you can even connect your computer directly to the NTD and it'll also work.

Fiber to the Node or Fiber to the Curb uses the standard copper wires for the last mile, and you'll need to own a VDSL modem. You can buy these yourself online and you can refer to Whirlpool wiki for a list of compatible modems

HFC requires it's own special DOCSIS cable modem. You can't buy these and will have to wait for the NBN technician to come and give you one.

        • Slight correction.

You can use a 'normal' VDSL modem for FTTN and FTTB.

FTTC requires the NBN provided Connection Box that also has a Reverse Power Unit built-in.

sorry to say, you could have a bad experience like this with any provider. your actual mistake was that you require internet for work, so you need to have backups in place. You either need to opt for a business internet connection with higher SLAs, or have some prepaid broadband sims to use in until connected, and if there are any outages. They can be picked up on special almost all the time at woolies or coles.

It always amazes me how spoilt and unable to deal with the normal vagaries of life we've all become. High speed internet is important, but it's hardly a day-to-day necessity, especially when access to free wifi is fairly ubiquitous. Not saying you don't have a right to be annoyed or angry - you were promised one thing and have been let down, but there are 9 exclamation marks in your comment, which to me is about 8 too many.

    • The United Nations Human Rights Council considers access to the internet a human right. Somehow 'hardly a day-to-day necessity' sounds very wrong and outdated. You wouldn't happen to be in your 50's or older would you?

      • The United Nations Human Rights Council

        HAHAHAHAHAHA, great stand up bit.

Ok no but seriously - "access to the internet" is not the same as "high speed landline access in the home". OP can post here on OzBargain - ergo OP has internet access.

Private sector is a ripoff with hopeless service levels like it always is.

Idiots voted for privatisation because apparently they can't lose their own money fast enough, they hate having working services and they love having their time wasted attempting to make them work.

New customer. I guess you don't Belong.

    why don't you have a 40GB Prepaid | 30 Days | $4.90 @ Kogan Mobile sim as a backup?

  • Belong is Telstra's budget ISP. Kind of similar to Dodo is Vocus's budget offering. Based on how bad the premium brand BigPond's support is I can't imagine how bad Belong must be.

If you've got FTTN or FTTP connection you can easily supply your modem/router, if the FTTP NTD is already installed into the property. If it's HFC or FTTC then NBN will supply a required modem. For FTTN get on Gumtree or Facebook market place and look for a Belong modem. Here's heaps available near me in Perth for $15 to $20. Or get something like a TG799VAC which are great for bridging to a better router like a Asus. I'd recommend if you have FTTN to get a spare modem any way because if you run into stability issues support or NBN may ask you test another modem any way before they do anything.

  • ^ Get a cheap prepaid SIM as backup. Prepare yourself better next time if internet connection is such an important thing for you. This can happen to any service provider for a million different reasons.
    Boost $15 35GB
    Lebara $20 50GB
    Just do a quick search
