Leasing out My Car

Hi guys, I'm going away for work for 6 months and a car will be provided, so was wondering what are some options to lease out my car to generate some income? I've considered services like carhood/carnextdoor and while it sounds good in theory, there's no guarantee drivers won't thrash the car or own up to damage they caused.. All my friends/family have cars already.

Guess it's going to be down to personal preference, but I would never lease out my car to someone I dont know. There's so many things that can go wrong mechanically (that's not covered by insurance) and there's no way in knowing how your car gets treated while you're away. The symptoms of mechanical damage don't necessarily appear immediately.

In your situation, I would simply change all the oils/fluids before going away and park it at home or somewhere safe. Then leave the keys so someone can start the engine and let it run for 10 minutes every couple of weeks.

Sell it. Buy another 6 mo. later.

    • Your jesting?

Just the stamp duty value lost on a car purchase doesn’t make this option economical.

Assuming you buy the same type etc. plus the hassles of finding a new car etc.

Unless the op wants to update etc, but if they did why ask the question the way they have.

Get a battery trickle charger and maybe put that on a timer. Otherwise you will be up for a new battery when you get back. Also get someone to get on it say every month. I wouldn't lend it out to anyone other than family or friends. The car with be driven like its stolen.

    • It's better to run the engine every few weeks so the oils get moved around and everything stays nicely lubricated.

      • It doesn't matter for 6 months

    There's a saying I was taught as a teenager…

There are 2 things you should never lease-out/lend: Wife and Car

Back in my day it was three: wife, car and gun.

I thought it was odd as me and most of my mates had none of them.

    • I didn't know you can get married before hitting 20……

      • You can get married at 16…

        • ….did you get married at 16?

          • @Zachary: Did I say I did…

            • -3

@brendanm: You said it was possible and the only way to have known that was to get married firsthand at 16….is it not?

              • @Zachary: Yes, the only way to know anything is to have done it…

It's definately not because I've heard of it happening, and then looked it up to see if it was actually the case. Did you know you have this magic thing on your phone, and your computer, it's called Google. You type questions in and it comes up with information.

Are you just pretending to be dumb?

Edit - just for you https://www.ag.gov.au/FamiliesAndMarriage/Marriage/Pages/Get…

Amazing what you can find out in about 15 seconds.

What if I just wanted your answer rather than google's answer, assuming they do have an answer on it….?

@Zachary: My answer? The odds of me being married at 16 are exceptionally low, the odds of Google giving you the correct answer, via a government website, are very high.

I still can't tell if you are being serious in your posts on here.

                    • -1

@brendanm: Sometimes it's just faster, easier and perhaps more convenient if the person answers the question rather than give you the directions to the answer……

                      • +1

@Zachary: You assumed the only way I would know if that was true, was if I was married at 16. That's insane. It's called general knowledge.

It's even quicker, and let's you learn yourself, if instead of asking, you did your own research, as it takes literally seconds.

                        • @brendanm: If it's general knowledge, how come I don't know about it then, hmmm?

It's even quicker, and let's you learn yourself, if instead of asking, you did your own research, as it takes literally seconds.

Well this is a forum where people like to be spoonfed or and prefer personal opinions/comments of others…..otherwise I'm sure with all those random posts about avoiding various fines, if whether the average ozbargainer earns 300k 350k a year, whether I should tell the buyer the truth or not get involved in a purchase decision, why a tesla car that has now dropped in price a great bargain, whether I should lease out my car or not, what I should spend 3k on to meet the minimum requirements for my credit card bonus, what your weekly allowances are, what should I do with a builder who owes me 40k, why we should ban these stupid maccas hacks, whether I should be responsible for a random stranger to enter my house and the owner's dog getting hit by a car, whether after reading an article by the ABC, would it affect your decision of buying from Amazon in future, spilling some water on my mac book and if I should take it back to apple, warranty claim on an out of warranty Bose headset, whether xbox one S is worth it for $250 or not, what I should do about a faulty item that was later revealed much later after purchase date, best payment method for selling a car, whether cats should wear collars or not, whatever happened to car culture, etc., wouldn't exist, now would it?

And this forum would be pretty bland and dead, wouldn't you agree?

                          • @Zachary: You don't know about it as you have limited general knowledge, common sense, and life experience.

Asking an open ended, opinion based question is completely different than a question that has a single answer, e.g. "what is the minimum age to get married", which is very easily confirmed by a government website, and has no grey area.

But you said it's general knowledge which means everyone young or old should know it…..and I just debunked that statement.

That can also be opinionated too, for example some could disagree and say we should all be able to marry at the age of 12? Or the opposite, we should ban all and any marriages no matter how old you are.

                              • @Zachary: You obviously don't have enough general knowledge to know what general knowledge is. That's problematic for you, but does explain most of your posts.

The question wasn't "what age do you think people should be able to get married". It was "what age can you get married at". The former is an opinion, the latter has only one correct answer.

I thought school wasn't finished for another couple of hours in WA?

Edit - you just made the first entry on my hidden users list, congratulations!

Then why did you even bring it up…? hah….

Actually it wasn't even a question, it was more like a typed out thought which I didn't expect an answer to….

Hooray I guess I'm on your block list which means I won't be seeing a reply to this comment….hmmm… daaawwwww, did a little kiddie hurt your feelings that you need to block him so badly? Damn people these days taking things so personal….. sigh

If it's a 20 year old s**t box and full of rust go ahead, it won't matter if they thrash it and write it off, but if it's a new/near new decent vehicle how about storing it?

don't think carnextdoor will even take on a 20yr old rusted out shitbox

  • I'd be concerned about the potential issues regarding traffic infringements.

  • what car is it?

  • Honestly just go for it. Take a long and proper read of carnextdoor's FAQ etc so you know exactly how they protect you and you can protect yourself, they wouldn't be running that business without thinking of those possibilities. Carnextdoor is flooded with generally just shitbox hatchbacks I guess people don't use or utes/pickups which can actually be useful to those who don't have one. So if you have a pickup or more modern sedan etc it may be worth it, but shitbox better off letting sit.

  • Park it in your garage for 6 months, then you can drive it when you get back. Why would you want random weirdos driving it, plus car next day pays an absolute pittance.

  • thanks guys, looks like ill park it and get a rello to turn engine on every so often

  • Hey I have used https://www.carhood.com.au. Earned a bit of money from them and got the car back really nice and clean.

Yes, they had to do a full clean after the clown orgy. It was a mess…
