G3 is best avoided, unless you're desperate.

    • dim screen! after all you buy computer to look at images, and this screen is 210nit! for reference I have a 300nit laptop, I keep brightness at 100% and I wish it was a tad brighter once in a while. 210nit sucks.
    • cheap materials
    • relatively heavy (2.5kg)

if you can live with the above, OK. but Inspiron 7757 is a better buy than i5 G3, IMO.

For the record I am for the 8th gen CPU's, they are awesome. I have a machine with i5-8300H and it delivers same performance as i7-7700HQ, if not even beats it a little bit. Supports faster RAM, is more power efficient etc. These days i3 i5 i7 mean little, one has to go and check real life performance on userbenchmark for instance.

I used to have a laptop with i7-7500U! and guess what, i7-7500U and i3-8130U is essentially the same thing :D

    • thanks for your post, you prompted me to do a bit of last minute research before hitting buy! one thing i learned though - 7757 has the exact same screen as the G3 3579.

      • I have 7567 - screen is probably the same. Let's just say that screen isn't it's best feature :) but ok for the price.
At least G3 is much less bulky.

      • screen can be easily replaced though. I did an instruction on how to find a good panel a while ago.

    • Thanks,

How's the battery life on Inspiron 7xxx?
      Does it support type-C charging?
      Whats the weight like?

      • I can't comment on that, since I own a Precision 3530 :D also i5-8300H

I have the 7577 and I replaced the screen with an after market 120hz panel which is brighter and has greater contrast.

This is the panel I bought: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/15-6-for-DELL-Inspiron-7557-7565…

There's a few places you can get this N156HHE-GA1 panel and it's quite easy to replace.

Can't confirm whether it will fit the G3 3579. Do some research.

I did that trick a few times, too. most laptops are easy to switch the panel around. did you get the limitations after the switch? some people report that when they go from 60 to 120hz they lose ability to adjust brightness. me, I never cared about refresh rate, more about accurate colour reproduction, so all my panels are 60hz.

my current panel in precision 3530 is a AUO flicker-free (no pwm) panel with wide gamut, it behaves well both for work and games alike. That one is B156HAN06.0. I actually prefer LG LP156WF6-spb2, also flicker free, but I sold it with my last laptop. Very smooth and pleasant. But AUO is sharper, better for work at the end of the day.

    • Nothing comes close on the specs for the price though!

      • that's right, but everything spells budget here.

thanks OP, just ordered. figured the extra $56 for the i7 was worth it. i need something for the wife to run indesign/photoshop/etc on and this looks like a bit of a beast.
