Recommend a PSU under $100 Please

Here's the current build: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/H7vXQZ

Bought the RX570 and discovered my "Codegen" 625w PSU doesn't have the 8 pin cable to power it. Whoops.

So I want to upgrade to a decent PSU instead of this thing, under $100 preferred. There's just so many options I have no idea what to get.

Cheers in advance.

I use this PSU tier-list. It's basically the bible for PSUs as far as I'm concerned.

Make sure you get at least 80+ Bronze.

Apart from that, you'd need at least 450W, and modular is always useful.

Don't know if the link will work, but this is my search parameters:

    https://au.pcpartpicker.com/products/power-supply/#X=0,10000…

Of that list, Rosewill Capstone is the only Tier-2 one I can see.

    650W
    80+ Gold Certified
    Semi-Modular

Really the only problem with this PSU for your build is that it might be too powerful, and so not delivering power in the band that maximises its efficiency. It's still 80+ Gold though so that's a super pedantic nitpick.

You want to be at least Tier-2 or Tier-3 at the lowest.

    PS: Isn't the AM3+ chipset last-gen?

I think that PCpartpicker list was made a long time ago, its the OP's current setup as opposed to his wish-list.

Ah that makes a lot more sense.

      • Yep it's the current setup. FX6300 is not top tier I realise but it was within budget so that's what I ended up with.

    • Hmm, found this 550W EarthWatts PRO 80Plus Gold Semi-Modular ATX: http://ijk.com.au/branch/ijk/product_info.php?products_id=15…

Or there's amethystau's recommendation of the eVGA GD Series 450W 80PLUS Gold.

Both appear to be in the tier 2 category as far as I can tell, obviously the Antec one has more wattage. What do you think?

Both are good choices, can't really go wrong. If you're looking to upgrade the whole build in the future though, the 450W might not be future proofed enough. That's the only (and minor) concern I'd have.

Yeah I kinda want to go higher power just in case. I think the earthwatts should be good. Thanks for your help mate (and everyone else who commented), I was a bit overwhelmed.

https://www.ple.com.au/Products/631100/eVGA-GD-Series-450W-8… comes out to around $100 delivered. EVGA comes with a 5yr warranty too if it matters to you.

    • Do you think 450W would cover my power requirements or would that be a bit on the knife edge?

      • +2

450w should be fine for most single card systems.

  • Well I ended up ordering the 550W EarthWatts PRO 80Plus Gold and a Coolermaster Hyper TX3 EVO cpu cooler since I'm running the stock one and it sucks.

Thank you everyone for your help and input, I really appreciate it.

  • Don't skimp on a cheap PSU, it will cost you heaps more when it takes out your mobo, CPU & RAM

Ha yes I am nervously eyeing my "codegen" 625w until the new earthwatts arrives on Monday.

  • kind of have the same problem. Decided to get a Ryzen 5 2600 system and a Vega 64, and am looking at a Thermaltake litepower 750w for $69. Trying to get a bit more and get a smart rgb 700w. I have also found silverstone 650 (just then), aerocool 700w and antec 700p as other options. I have also read that the card draws 300w max, but needs 50 amps on the 12v rail? Previous posters have said to get a good quality 550 and leave it at that, but seems kind of risky to me…
