Where to stay and what to do in Melbourne?

short trip to Melbourne with my partner for 4/5 days. we never been there and want to know where is a good spot in the city to base ourselves? just to explore the city, sight seeing and tourist stuff.

also we dont know what to do there. were doing a trip to philip island one day and great ocean road trip another day.
but what is there to see/do in the city?
partner likes shopping, we dont drink, and im a 7/11 coffee person lol.

    How is Bright or Albury?
I heard from someone years ago and never managed to find out more, google or TA
Meant to find out best time to go and places to stay. If anyone has any hidden tips, not available publicly, please share!
    Thanks!

IMHO Bright is worth the trip only in Autumn to see the autumn leaves or winter skiing trip to stay overnight.

Albury Haven’t got anything to offer apart from being a border town.

If you like architectural kind of things, about 10km east of Albury, Hume Dam, and long bridge over the Murray River, just outside Bellbridge. The drive there and back is pretty nice too.

  • Can easily spend a day in the CBD walking around exploring all the laneways, buildings etc

Drive a few hours to Wilson’s Prom, probably a day trip

    Mornington Peninsula is nice too

    see the apex gangs

they're seasonal creatures generally only appearing around election time

  • +1 Mornington is great, look at the penguins on PI and NGV. Queen Vic Market as well.

We usually stay at Doubletree, while the parking situation isn't great (there's plenty of Secure Parking nearby) but it's within walking/tram distance to most things. Lovely cafe couple of laneways away.

If you like architecture, lots to see, starting with the Manchester Unity building, and St Paul's Cathedral.
Start a morning walk at Flinders St (between Swanston and Elizabeth St) and wander through the lanes and arcades.
    Visit ACMI at Fed Square.
The live theatre scene is excellent. The Princess and Her Majesty's are beautifully restored, and offer better experiences than most theatres on Broadway or in the West End.
Parliament House is interesting and there are free tours.
At Phillip Island, the GP circuit is worth a visit, the go-kart track is lots of fun and if you like motorbikes there is an excellent museum.

best thing to do in melbourne is book transport to get you out of there. you're already excluded from the only thing to do in melbourne (beer)

    • +2

      Spoken like a true sydneysider

      • can't help it if its true. there isn't much i'd recommend in sydney outside of beer either.

  • The best things are outside the city.
