First Time Selling on eBay Is It Normal for PayPal to Hold Funds for 21 Days (I Am The Seller)

So first time selling on eBay and I put two payment options PayPal or bank deposit.

Buyer has chosen PayPal and has paid but funds are in hold and it says 21 days.. is this normal?

I will be posting the item tomorrow or some time this week.

What is the process normally for PayPal payments as a seller.

Will the funds clear once it is sent or has arrived or just after 21 days in hold?

Really curious as to whether this is normal or maybe bank deposit is a better payment receiving method than PayPal.

Can the buyer chargeback and stiff me?

Should I wait for the PayPal hold to clear before sending it.

Sorry first time ebay seller here.. normally I am the buyer.

EDIT: Thanks gang I found the answer

  • Yes, it's normal.

    • So I have to wait 21 days for the payment to come in?

Haha don't be so harsh. I don't sell and I'd have no idea either - the 21 days could be a default until delivery of the goods is confirmed, or there might be other cases where the timeframe could be shortened.

Read the terms and conditions about selling. It's there man. Don't rely on others.

Thanks argonide this is the answer I was looking for much appreciated.

    • Well if the transaction is ON HOLD you got a problem that needs to be resolved.
That is quite different to waiting the 21 days

    Yes and yes and yes.

Should I wait for the PayPal hold to clear before sending it

Yes it's on hold for first time seller for don't know how long. You need to send item. Once 21 days the fund will be clear to your account. Sometimes you can get it early.

    • Just rememeber with PAYPAL that the SELLER does not have any protection against a claim from the buyer (even an illegitimate one) other than for a claim for non-delivery if tracking shows the item has been delivered.

I found some useful information for anyone in the same situation.

Yeah I'm used to doubling because I miss things. Maybe it just wasn't presented as clearly also idk anyways hopefully someone else benefits from this message.

  • I wonder if you can avoid this by selling stuff to yourself? You'd lose a small percentage for fees but that could be worth it to get paid right away when you actually sell something.

    • No idea but could be worth trying out.

    • That won't work. I've sold hundreds of items on ebay and I still have to wait up to 21 days for most items (occasionally the funds are instantly provided to me after the buyer pays).

      • Darn. I wish we knew what the formula was that decides if you have payments held.

    • I'm pretty sure that's against eBay's T&Cs and you'd be risking getting your account entirely banned. I don't think worth the risk - though a compromise might be to start selling with only lower value items.

  • Yes; that is the new 'norm' .
Ebay always do this now with new accounts

    • How many days or items until it doesn't do this or what happens in the next phase and how long does it take?

      • Here is Google result: Payments as a new seller are held for 21 days UNLESS when you send an item the buyer leaves feedback OR if you send the item trackable and that item shows as delivered + 3 days then email paypal and they will release the funds sooner. Payment holds occur because: You have been selling on eBay for less than 90 days.

        • So payment goes off hold when:

          • seller adds tracking information
          • buyer leaves feedback
          • courier reports item as delivered
          • you have been selling on eBay for less than 90 days
          • @AlienC: It may help for you to include a small note for buyers to leave feedback the soonest they're ok with the item, to help funds released to you.

  • Yes normal cause PayPal have too much power. Will keep happening for a while.

  • i'm a new seller too and dear god are the paypal fees monstrous.

  • you have 2 easy options—- 1,you can read their terms and conditions,
